The physical swelling sounds obviously related to the vaccinations. The question then, is that the EXTENT of the damage? I think the behaviors you mentioned are STRONGLY and suspiciously indicative of Autistic like behaviors. You need to get your grandson to a neurologist or PREFERABLY to a licensed Psychologist EXPERIENCED in diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorders. This is probably not what you want to hear, but the behaviors you describe are STEREOTYPICAL Autistic symptoms. They are not proof he has an Autism Spectrum disorder, but they ARE cause for concern of that case. The fact you are in this newsgroup indicates you already suspect this to be true. A Psychologist, (be sure to get one experienced in diagnosing Autism) can confirm or disprove this. Some myths to beware: 1. MYTH - " He will grow out of it " FACT - if these behaviors you observe are INDEED symptoms of Autism, meaning he HAS Autism, - he will not grow out of it. Children do not simply outgrow this condition, there is NO research to prove otherwise. His behavior will only get worse as he ages (if left untreated). 2. MYTH- " He is too young to diagnose, let's wait till he is older and we can tell for sure. " FACT- Children as young as 18 months can be diagnosed with better than 80% accuracy using the CHAT test at http://www.featnt.org/info/chattest.asp <http://www.featnt.org/info/chattest.asp> In fact, the earlier the diagnosis, the better, as research indicates maximum benefit to treatment in the 0 - 5 age range. I have been reading about reactions to vaccinations and I have a question. When my grandson was given 5 at one time, his little legs swelled the size of golf balls in both legs and were bright red. His legs stayed this way for weeks and the lumps in his legs did not go away for 6 months. It was after the shots he stopped talking, stopped making eye contact and began lining everything in the house he could get his hands on. I came into the living room and he had taken all the video tapes off the shelf and lined them around the room and down the hall and into his room. He became very upset when I tried to pick them up...and thus things have gone. From the day he was born I use to rock him to sleep at night. He would always cry for me to do it...now he wont let me hold him at all. Was his reaction to the shots significant? His pediatrician said it was normal and not to worry about it but the swelling seem very unusual to me especially the bright red , hot reaction as well as the lumps lasting months. This may not be significant but I was wondering if anyone had an idea about it...thanks

Guest guest
He has been diagnosed and the doctor told us immunizations can not cause this.but after reading posts to this site and other things on the net..I question that. Sounds to me like the shots could be at the root of his autism. Knowing wont change things for my grandson but knowing could help my peace of mind.. And selfishly I want some answers. I want to be able with some knowledge to help my daughter stop feeling such deep guilt that somehow she is at fault. All her friends blame her. As if she has done anything wrong.she is a great mom. One friend told her if she had put him in day care when he was younger this would not have happened. People can be so cruel at times. I just have nothing to compare with to know if his reaction was significant enough to have been caused by the shots. If many doctors do not accept the premise that it can cause autism, then obviously there is no test per say. I am learning those who have walked down this road for awhile have those answers not the doctors. immunization question Hi, I am only 3 months into the education process and I have been reading anything and everything I can get my hands on and trying to understand ,probably more than my mind can absorb this rapidly. Guest guest
What has he been diagnosed with? MOST doctors ALWAYS say this because they are brainwashed beginning in Medical School to this line of thinking. Furthermore, Doctors are the single biggest group of investors in the Pharmaceutical industry (by profession), so they have a FINANCIAL interest in most cases in perpetuating this myth. The truth is that there IS scientific research supporting the idea that Vaccinations CAN cause Autism. Just because the medical monopoly refuses to acknowledge it doesn't mean the evidence isn't there. From youre story it certainly sounds like you have some evidence that there was a strong PHYSICAL reaction, if you have documentation supporting the loss of Speech and or irregular behavior patterns ocurring soon after the vaccinations, you may have grounds to prove your case before This is a huge are of debate and there is ALOT of research supporeting this idea, but I can't refer you to all of it. A good place to start is: http://www.vaccineinfo.net/ <http://www.vaccineinfo.net/> also, be aware that there is a time limit starting when you are aware of the symptoms of the injury. Guest guest
Well all we have been told is that he is autistic/PDD. He finally has an appointment, after being on a waiting list , to be assessed , not sure the correct term but where we filled out tons of paper work about him then he goes in for test to determine more precisely his problems. 2 doctors and a therapist have stated they believe he is autistic. I assume these tests are to further confirm and define. I was very upset when I got his medical records today in the mail because even though his first pediatrician made notes about his developmental delay.she has in her notes that testing in these areas needs to be pursued 12/02. NO where in his records are the 5 separate requests we made to have her send a letter of referral to the Meyers Center at Texas Childrens Hospital, which they would not accept him without.or to any other clinic in Houston. We begged for one for 6 months then just found a new doctor. Every time we called they assured us it was taken care of, then nothing . We checked repeatedly with the Meyers clinic.nothing. And the doctor did not even make a note in my grandsons records to send one, or that we requested one. Just notes like , he was hysterical through the visit. That he could speak 10 words at age 1 then at age 2 no words. But her notes made no connection as if she did not notice he stopped. It is as if he did not matter. I am sorry I cannot stop crying. How can people do this. How can a doctor do this???? immunization question Hi, I am only 3 months into the education process and I have been reading anything and everything I can get my hands on and trying to understand ,probably more than my mind can absorb this rapidly. Guest guest
, We like to think of ALL Doctors as altruistic and ONLY interested in our personal care and well being, sadly this is a fantasy that just isn't true. And to be fair, not entirely fair to Doctors. Doctors are only human, to expect them to be otherwise is unrealistic. This means they ALSO have biases, and opinions and many times these biases and opinions are no more founded on hard scientifc research than ours are as laypeople. They are too willing to depend on the word of orgs like the AMA and the CDC which are HEAVILY influenced by the Pharmaceutical industry. And like any profession, there are some that don't really care about the people they should be serving as much as the insurance companies and other orgs that tell them what to believe and how to act. Doctor's records are often sloppy, we found innacurracies on our children's immunization document! (something that is important enough you would think they would keep better records for.) But don't lose hope. All is not lost. There are treatments available for children with Autism that are showing alot of promise: Be sure to look into ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis), Dietary treatment and other Biomedical treatments that are emerging. You need to find a DAN doctor near you to get started with some of the Diagnostic tests and treatments that are showing promise. Some links are : Autism Network for Dietary Intervention - http://www.autismndi.com/ <http://www.autismndi.com/> Autism Research institute - http://www.autism.com/ari/contents.html <http://www.autism.com/ari/contents.html> good general info and look for " DAN! Physician Referral List " Families for Early Autism Treatment - North Texas - http://www.featnt.org/ <http://www.featnt.org/> FEAT-NT has a great " New Parents Pack " that has ALOT of resources for new parents. (There website is currently down, today, but should be back up tomorrow) A couple of websites I maintain - http://www.AutismTreatment.info/ <http://www.AutismTreatment.info/> and http://www.StarThrowers.org/ <http://www.StarThrowers.org/> Your crying is normal, but you will find strength through action and the knowledge that your grandson's best hope for a normal life is in YOUR hands (and your daughters). This is not a condition where you can go to the Doctor and they will just fix it for you, as you are already finding out. But YOU CAN DO IT. You can help your grandchild and improve his life. It will be hard work, but VERY rewarding emotionally and spiritually. Good luck, J. P. I am beginning to have no sympathy for them what so ever, and do believe they are culprits in all this.

Guest guest
, I'd like to recommend a very good book to read. It's called, 'Treating Autism Parent stories of Hope and Success' Edited By M. Edelson, PH.D. & Bernard Rimland, PH.D. There are stories by about 25 different families & the things they did to help their children. It may help you & your daughter realize that most of us have gone through the same things & there is hope. It's usually very slow & extremely expensive, but things can get better. Best wishes, Lori In a message dated 8/4/03 3:19:59 PM Central Daylight Time, jreirdon@... writes: > Your crying is normal, but you will find strength through action and the > knowledge that your grandson's best hope for a normal life is in YOUR hands > (and your daughters). Guest guest
>There is so much information to assemble and sort and we do not want to do anything wrong. < Dawn from PROVE told me once that she has had parents tell her that they gave into the pressure to vaccinate with boosters their autistic children and then saw their child regress. I have spoken to one parent personally that saw this happen to their child when they received boosters. Based on this kind of information we have chosen for Tristan to not receive boosters, and have gotten the support of our M.D. in the form of a medical exemption. If you are not totally sure the boosters are safe and necessary you should claim the conscientious exemption we now have in our state. In my opinion the risks of vaccines trully outweighs (if any) benefits to our children.

Guest guest
Thank you Lori, Everyone has been so kind and helpful. I think we are still at that stage of shock to the system and pocket book, some denial, lots of guilt and wanting to find all the answers in one day and feeling like we know nothing and the more we read the less we seem to know. We know he is coming up on boosters and we do not know how to handle that. There is so much information to assemble and sort and we do not want to do anything wrong. I have lost my faith in listening too hard to doctors yet you have to at the same time. ly it is all very confusing. I have a new question and that is.has anyone had any experience with water therapy? I guess that is how you would say that. We started letting him go swimming for about 20 minutes each day this week, and that seemed to make a big difference in his stress level the rest of the day. I am not sure if I am just hoping that is true or if anyone has experienced or read anything about that? We all noticed an improvement in that he does not seem to get as upset and cry as often the balance of the day. When relaxed he seems to get words to form better. Is that my imagination or wishful thinking or could there be something to it?
