vaccine waiver for school- my first experience

My first experience with this was today- I wanted to be ready for Noah starting

kindy in the fall. I was planning to go to the health dept because I heard that

is where you get the waivers (religious or medical here in Indiana). I thought I

better call before I lug 3 kids in with me. Turns out, they don't do that at the

health dept- you get them at the school. SO, I called the school and talked with

the school nurse. She has them, and they are available at registration in the

fall. I could go get one now, but she said if I want I can just sign it at

registration. She said it is " really no big deal! " Phew. Not as hard as I

thought it would be I guess!

I would NOT sign the one that the school provides. The one that my son's school

provides has language written in it that makes parents sound horrible for not

vaccinating. Like, " I know that by not vaccinating, I am putting my child's

life at risk " . I would look for a local vaccine awareness group and see if they

have one that they had drawn up. We have a local group who did that, it was

word for word what the law stated and when they told me to sign their form at

the school, I told them to read the law, it says that I don't. But make sure

that you go by the law.

Wonderful news Steph! I'm sure that's a load off of your mind. Now you can

relax and enjoy the rest of your summer. I, too, was pleasantly surprised that

getting a religious exemption here in KY went so smoothly. PHEW is right! :)

Good reminder, Sara. The exemptions vary by state AND could also vary

by school district.

My children's exemption is very short and sweet. It

states: " Religious Exemption - The above named child is hereby granted

a religious exemption on the basis of a written sworn statement by the

parents or guardians objecting to the immunization of such child on

religious grounds. " That's it! The schools have never asked to see

my " written sworn statement. " I just gave them a copy of the exemption

itself.

Around here, where I live in the Midwest, those papers you have to

sign at school are referred to as " bad mommy papers. " Now I know

why!!!!

In my case, no one can ever call me a bad mommy for doing this. My son has

epilepsy that we are convinced is from his vaccines. If you think I am going to

give him or any of my other children some of that poison after all we've been

through- THAT would be a bad mommy! You wouldn't want to challenge me on it or

cross my path! The mommy claws would be coming out!

You can write your own intentions near your signature. I signed one of those

" bad mommy " forms once for the peds office exemption and jotted the truth where

I signed; never had a problem. I do own a good school exemption form and suggest

you get one too, but I have NEVER heard of one of these " bad mommy " forms being

used against a mom. It's just a stupid game they play to get their point across.

Has anyone ever seen this type of form backfire recently and end up forcing a

mom to vax her children?

Who Knows, your school form may be just fine as is so don't go worrying

yourself. If not, you'll know what to do whether it's using another form or

writing on theirs.

Oh, I totally agree. I was thinking just today if I would be able to

go throw w/ allowing vaccinations...envisioning me at the drs. office

and watching it being done. I just CAN'T do that, KNOWING what

dangers it can/could cause. I agree that we're not " bad mommies, "

but that is the joke around here. Someone will say, " yep, I had to

sign the 'bad mommy papers.' " I think it is " bad " not to be

informed about what's going into your child.

--I know- I was in the ped's office on Friday to confirm that baby had

roseola, which he did and he is fine. BUT they were doing physicals on kids

getting ready for school and it was HEARTBREAKING hearing the kids in the next

rooms getting their shot or shots- I have no idea what they get before starting

school, but will NOT be doing that to my little guys! Oh, I wanted to cry!

Something else interesting while I was in there: I took Gray in because he had

a rash all over, and had a fever the day before, etc. Heard rumors of mumps &

scarlet fever (with one child's death and others infected) going around locally

so I wanted to be sure I was doing things right by just letting this thing run

its course. So, Gray had roseola which, thankfully just has to run its course

like I was doing. BUT the ped did say that he has a hard time believing that the

child died from scarlet fever. He said, " I think it must have had something else

going on - " and I said " oh, like a reaction to medication or something " and he

was like " yeah- I think it had to do with another factor than just the scarlet

fever. " Interesting! What we often think, too!

Modern version of scarlet fever is not a big deal. My daughter just had it.

Years ago it used to be feared because of complications, such as ARF, so

technically, scarlet fever hardly ever killed, but some complications of it did.

Again, modern strains are virtually complication-free, and this is why even many

doctors talk about it being a totally benign disease. Still, they are

prescribing antibiotics for it (i.e. for possible complications) just like in

the old days...

I think that there was something sent to this group about the dangers of signing

their papers. I just know that personally, I would never put my name on

anything that says that I am a bad mother.
