I would like to know if any of you have knowledge of or personal experience about this: My son is 12, he is recovering from a bad case of shingles. He's been so ill with it. I know it's the same virus as chicken pox. I thought I was doing the right thing when he was a toddler to get him vaccinated against chicken pox, but now I'm wondering how his developing shingles is related to the vaccine. It IS rare for children to be getting shingles, but the incidence of it is rising as more children get the chicken pox vaccine. My son did not have the vaccine. He had chicken pox when he was 2 years old. But the decrease in cases of full blown chicken pox due to the vaccine messing with mother nature has led to an increase in shingles. Typically you don't get shingles unless you've first had chicken pox or the vaccine at some point. BUT with all the vaccines babies are getting these days, anything is possible. But the incidence of shingles in children HAS risen as a result of the CP vax. But children who have had natural chicken pox are affected, too. His mom mentioned something about his nanny who stays with him every day having a lot of herpes sores, and she thinks that he got it from her through kissing on eczema affected skin. Can it be? He is the only baby, and is babysitted at his home while his mom is at work, so I think it is unlikely. I know one of the things that they tell you when you're pregnant is not to kiss your baby if you have a cold sore. The herpes virus is similar to chickenpox - it's herpes zoster that causes shingles, as opposed to herpes simplex which is what causes cold sores. A baby who has such severe eczema, practically from birth, is certainly constitutionally compromised, that's for sure. And if the eczema is breaking the skin then there is a gateway open. I personally would have thought it risky to have a nanny with such a serious skin problem caring for a baby with such a serious skin problem. BTW, I'm assuming you mean a *nurse* nanny, aot a *grandma* nanny? (Nanny is what many English children call their grandmas.) Is he breastfed, out of curiosity? I'd be taking this child off to a homoeopath PDQ, I know that... My dd was infected by herpes simplex as a baby from a neighbor who had a cold sore and kissed my dd on the mouth. Grrr... This poor baby has some major issues going on for his skin to be showing such problems. And unfortunately any suppression of his skin symptoms will only drive the problems deeper where they will eventually affect the internal organs. And BTW Sue, American children also call their grandma's " nanny. " : ) (my MIL is " Nanny " to my kids and MY mom is " Oma " as she is from Germany). Also, I think we have problem with terms talking about herpes sores. I meant that his babysitter has frequent cold sores on her mouth. So is it possile at all to get shingles from it??? But certainly with this baby's health being so compromised exposure to the herpes simplex virus isn't helping him at all, but it would not " give " him shingles. Respectfully snipping Sheri's comments, valid though they are. This poor baby is off to a lousy start, I fear. Firstly a baby with eczema is pretty much doomed if formula fed - it could be the formula causing the eczema, or it could be aggravating/maintaining it, but you can bet that it's a significant factor somewhere. And I'm not going to ask if he's vaccinated because I'm sure he is from what you've said. That is also going to be a contributory factor. He certainly has some issues, even at eight months. I think this lady with her frequent cold sores needs to be very careful about her personal contact with this babe - I know we all want to kiss and cuddle young babes - sort of second nature, I guess - but if she has frequent cold sores she is likely to infect this baby with the herpes simplex that causes them - and I don't think he needs that on top of his other problems. I don't, however, think that would have cause shingles. I wonder if he really did have shingles - or if it was something else? I guess it's possible that he has been exposed to the CP virus by way of someone else's vaccine shedding, but perhaps not likely. That may remain a mystery unless a possible contact can be found, but even so, he would not get shingles without having been exposed to CP. I would guess that he's already too immuno-compromised with that eczema to have thrown up a reaction to CP exposure, but it could have gone down inside instead. Sad that she's mainstream because I think this baby is going to need some serious homoeopathic treatment before he gets much older. I can see just where this will go - steroids to suppress the eczema, that will drive it deeper into other areas of the body, and it will probably come out as asthma, and so it goes on. And to top it all, he's left with a sitter all day. I don't see him growing up to be a very happy chappy. Out of curiosity, what did they do to treat the shingles? All you can do is encourage her to see a good homoeopath to try and patch up some of the damage. I did recommend seeing a homeopath/naturopath, but the mom didn't seem very perceptive to that idea. Kind of didn't pay any much attention to my suggestion and moved right on talking about something else... My heart aches for this child... Also wanted to ask you: do you think using Chinese herbs that our TCM doctor gave my baby for his skin issues (mild eczema on his face that comes and goes) is a good idea? Or is is better off left alone, just brestfeeding, passing on vaccines etc? Should I just let it run its course and give his body a chance to balance itself?
