Guest guest
Get the powdered form of sodium ascorbate vitamin c - and add a pinch to the pedialite (but why are you giving that to him?) The only reason my daughter got (and continues to get) apple juice - is to put the vitamin c in it Let the cold run it's course - steamy bathroom if the congestion gets bad - Saline nose spray for runny nose or major congestion (of course if you're still nursing you can always squirt breastmilk up his nose too) Coughing is worrisome on little ones. But for the most part, the doc will say there's not anything they can give you - or recommend an antibiotic (and while there are many on this list that NEVER use antibiotics - I would if there was a real infection) but not for a cold or sore throat. Check the archives on fever treatment. Good luck. Cheryl
Guest guest
Don't worry too much about his cold, May, he will get over it well with breastmilk alone. I know what it is like when your baby is unwell, you just want to do everyting you can to make him better as quickly as possible. Did you know that breastmilk is antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and that it contains natural painkillers? And they found 100.000 substances in it that make it what it is? You simply can't get better than breastmilk for a baby. We have been so badly conditioned by society to worry about the slightest problem that we resort to medicine far too quickly. If your son is not vaccinated his immune system will be even stronger and combined with breasatfeeding, it will help him recover from the cold before you know it. A steamy bath or shower is good to unblock an nose and what worked for me was simply feeding as this seemed to unblock his nose well. The best natural remedy is right inside you, it is breastmilk, you don't need anything else. Giving any allopathic medicine will go against what his immunes system is doing. Remember, symptoms are there for a reason and the mucus produces during a cold is there to help clear out the toxins. The fever, if any ,is good too. All the best, Ingrid
Guest guest
Thanks so much Ingrid! This helps reassure me! My husband has been insisting that I give him a decongestant (pediacare). My poor baby screams when we squirt it down his mouth! His cough is terrible! I need to learn a lot more to be a good mother! Still learning as I go! Jake has not been vaccinated in spite of family and doctors pressuring us to do so! I am constantly hoping that I am doing the right thing! (he is in the sling nursing and sleeping as I type this) Thank you so much! May > > Don't worry too much about his cold, May, he will get over it well with breastmilk alone. Guest guest
Thanks for your advice! I still have a lot to learn! I meant to say pediacare decongestant, not pedialyte. I wonder how long he will be sick? His cough sounds so bad! We just tried what our family told us to - the decongestant! I will definately ask this group first - next time! Thanks again, May > > Get the powdered form of sodium ascorbate vitamin c - and add a pinch to the pedialite (but why are you giving that to him?) Guest guest
Hi May, coughs have a purpose, they help clear the airways of mucous. My son gets them quite bad and a steamy shower or bath seems to really help. Keep an eye on your baby, the breastmilk will help him get over it and if you feel he needs some help, use the right kind of homeopathic remedy. Here is a website that Sheri N. posted to help you with the right choice: http://www.simillimum.com/FirstAid/TheFirstResponder/FirstAidin/Coughs.html Ingrid
Guest guest
May, you ARE a wonderful mother and you are the best mother in the whole wide world for your baby. Wearing him in a sling is the best thing for him as he can feel, hear and smell you this way, things that will help his immune system and calm him to help him recover. You are doing great, you are fantastic, so kepp going and you and your baby will come out the other end stronger and healthier. The breastmilk is white gold so you are doing the perfect thing for him right now. Well done!!!! Love, Ingrid maymcmindes <maymcmindes@...> wrote: Thanks so much Ingrid! This helps reassure me! Guest guest
I totally agree with Ingrid! Just wanted to add that if the nasal congestion gets too bad, insted of saline, which someone mentioned, or suction, which my kids never tolerated well, I used a few drops of expressed breastmilk to clear the nose. Got that tip from an old pediatrician. It works great and allows them to breathe better if the congestion is interfering there. Remember that each little illness is like exercise for his tiny immune system. He is getting stronger and stronger as you allow his body to do its work. Good job, mamma! Guest guest
What a great piece of advice coming from a pediatrician, not many would even know about the importance of bf. Well done. Guest guest
Jami, I totally agree and we must all remember that just because we choose not to vaccinate or because we choose healthier lifestyles, it does not mean that we won't become sick or get colds, etc... But it does mean that our bodies will be able to handle these things better because our immune systems will be doing what they intended to do! Sheri B. Guest guest
One thing you can do to help your sons congestion is express breastmilk into a cup and then eyedropper it into his nostrils. works like a charm michele
Guest guest
---If you happen to buy a nose spray ( though BM would be best) or have bought it make sure it does not contain thermisol as some do. michele
