Kaiden's Story: Beating The Odds Of Autism

WINDHAM, Maine -- Kaiden refused to play with his toys or respond to his

name, and he engaged in repetitive behaviors -- all symptoms of autism.

Today, one in 166 children is born with autism, a figure that has grown

significantly in the past 20 years.

His mother, a McPhee, said the regressions began when Kaiden was 9

weeks old. That coincided with his first round of vaccinations, which

included a diptheria-pertussis-tetanus shot that contained a mercury-based

preservative called thimerasol.

Studies have shown a link between mercury and autism and indicated that

some children may be genetically predisposed to autism due to weaknesses in

their bodies that make them more susceptible to mercury's effects.

Dr. Doug Robbins, a psychiatrist who treats children with autism, disputes

those findings, as do other studies commissioned by the pharmaceutical and

medical industries.

But Dr. Knight, who also treats autistic children, said parents who

know their children and notice drastic changes in them cannot be ignored.

He also said that the symptoms of mercury toxicity are similar to those of

autism.

" And there's been too many studies that show very high levels of mercury in

these children and a decreased ability to be able to excrete the mercury as

well, " he told News 8.

Many parents of autistic children believe the answer lies in homeopathic

remedies. Homeopathy is the practice of using natural substances in dilute

form to treat conditions, rather than just the symptoms.

Homeopath Frederick explained, " When there is any kind of imbalance

in a person, it's like there's something missing, and the remedy fills that

void. "

Treating autistic children has become a specialty for Frederick. She gave

Kaiden a remedy that contained dilute amounts of the DPT vaccine.

McPhee said one dose made a difference, and a second dose four months later

brought huge improvements.

" He just blossomed. He started doing things 2-year-olds do, " she said.

Another approach in treating childhood autism is diet.

Dr. Knight said that gluten -- a protein group found in wheat and other

flours -- and casein -- a dairy protein -- produce substances that behave

very similarly to opium in an autistic child's body.

A study by the Autism Research Institute found that 63 percent of autistic

children had a positive response to gluten- and casein-free diets.

Today, McPhee says, Kaiden shows no signs of autistic behavior. He's off

the special diet and is enrolled in a traditional preschool with other

active and engaged children.
