He got the Chicken Pox anyway

by Troy Krause / Editor

When I was a kid, I got the Chick-en Pox. I remember that it itched a lot,

but I don't recall there being any other real issues.

I remember my dad got them the same time that the Krause kids got them and

for him it was a bit more miserable.

I just assumed for kids getting the Chicken Pox was a rite of passage.

It was something you put up with for a little while, so you didn't have to

deal with it as an adult.

Apparently, someone along the line didn't like the Chicken Pox very much and

decided that it was necessary to develop a vaccine.

That Chicken Pox vaccine has been given to thousands if not millions of

children, including two of the Krause kids.

Actually, if they have not had the Pox by the time they near Kindergarten

age, they are required to get the vaccine or, apparently they can't start

school.

So, when Mimi got the Chicken Pox earlier this year, we thought nothing of

it. She had had a mild case of them when she was very young back when Naomi

and Caleb became part of the societal tradition.

To the surprise of the Krause adults, just four days ago my Amos came down

and complained about itching.

By Monday morning he was covered with spots. Obviously, the vaccine did not

work.

I must admit I had some mixed emotions about the ordeal. I felt bad for him,

because he looked uncomfortable, but I was also a little more than upset.

All along and I, and many others for that matter, have argued that a

Chicken Pox vaccine is a waste of time. We would much rather see our

children suffer through the discomfort for a period of time, like we did,

than wonder if they would ever get it as adults.

I'm really hoping that my gets them, too, and that we are all over

them, because I would not wish the Chicken Pox on any adult.

It is my opinion that the vaccine should be stopped. Granted, there are

extreme circumstances when children do get very sick and some children have

died from the Chicken Pox, but people die from colds, too.

I firmly believe that the reason the vaccine is now mandated is because we

live in a society where it is far too inconvenient for one parent to take

that much time off of work. In a time when both parents are working, we

would much rather push the issue aside than just let it run its course.

Daycare providers don't want to deal with it, and I don't blame them. I do

blame a society that puts the almighty dollar ahead of its own, though.

One has to wonder if this vaccine has only served to develop a new strain of

Chicken Pox that could mean those of us who had them might get them again.

I understand the value of some vaccines. They have eradicated diseases that

are far more serious than the Chicken Pox.

For those vaccines I am grateful.

For this one, I am not.

This past weekend, the eldest Krause child, my Naomi, participated in the

4-H quiz bowl competition. She was part of a Rabbit Quiz Bowl team along

with some kids in the Lyon County 4-H program. They won their regional

contest and qualified for the state contest in April. Nice job, Buddy. Of

course, you do know that this means the Krause farm is going to increase by

at least one more little creature
