Guest guest
Hi, Sue. Abnormally high RBC levels is atypical for PWCs, which is concerning and may indicate something else has developed. Here is a Mayo Clinic link with a list of common causes for this condition that you may want to consider along with your folate question which I don't have an answer: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/high-red-blood-cell-count/AN00490/ " Sue T " <morabshadow@...> wrote: > > High Rich, and all, > > Can you help explain what may be going on with my folate levels? > > Could it possibly be that my very high (off the charts)RBC levels still > means that I have not coverted to the correct type of folate? > > In other words how do I know my if the RBC levels are the correct type > of folate? > > My MCV blood cell levels are still high normal to high in reference > range, low ferrtin, normal Methylmalonic acid(slightly high normal) > doing .2 ml methyl b12 every other day plus various oral B12s on off > days. > > Thanks and best wishes, > Sue T >
Guest guest
HI , Thanks for your reply. I am sorry I was not clear. I meant to say the " high Folate RBC count " not high RBC count.I was wondering if the High RBC Folate count was acutally a measurement of the L-5-tetrahydrofolate. To make it simple ; Is a high RBC Folate count a measurement of L-5-tetrahydrofolate(the kind we need) or some other folate. Not sure why I have such " off the charts " high RBC folate. Sorry to be confusing . . a little nervous since I have an Endomentrial Ablation and General anesthesia scheduled in two days for the heavy bleeding and Kaiser is driving me CRAZY!! I am also wating for results from a D & C for endrometrial cancer today, too. Sue T davidhall2020 <david-hall@...> wrote: Hi, Sue. Guest guest
Hi, Sue. Sounds like your plate is really full right now. You have my prayers for good D & C results and also for the endometrial ablation prodecure under general anesthesia. With regard to the forms of folate in the blood, here's what is says in Henry, J.B., Clinical Diagnosis and Management by Laboratory Methods, 20th ed., 2001, p. 549: " Unlike serum folate (which is entirely 5-methyltetrahydrofolate), red cell folates are a heterogeneous mixture of different forms with varying polyglutamate chain lengths, which pose challenges to nonmicrobiological assays. " I'm not sure what's going on with your high RBC folate level, but one possibility would be a folate trap mechanism. The idea there is that if the operation of the methionine synthase enzyme is lower than normal, more and more folate gets converted into methyltetrahydrofolate, and it just keeps building up, because the only reaction that uses it is the methionine synthase reaction, and it's going too slow. As you know, this reaction also needs methycobalamin, and a common cause of a folate trap mechanism is a deficiency of B12. I think another possibility would be mercury toxicity, because, according to Prof. Deth, mercury blocks the formation of methylcobalamin. I understand that you are supplementing methylcobalamin and other forms of B12, so it would seem that you have that possibility covered. Are you taking various forms of folate supplements also, such as FolaPro, folinic, and folic? Sorry I'm not able to participate on the list as much as I'd like. Working on deadlines for papers, and also my mother-in-law is in hospice care now, and, of course, we don't know how long she will live, so things are kind of uncertain right now around here. I wish you the best for your upcoming procedure.
