Guest guest
Hi all, I read the discussion on organic food and would like to add that I feel very, very strongly about this subject. The very simple reason is the fact that organic produce, especially home produced is so much less of a burden to the einvironment, the planet, the people who produce it (less illness from exposure to pesticides), to the economy (less pesticides needing to be dispossed off or produced and less aftereffects needed to be dealt with), to our babies and children, to our bodies, to our HEALTH. Just think of the way it is grown: you have a healthy soil, teaming with healthy bacteria, which will grow healthy plants that are less resistant to attack from pests and diseases and much richer in nutrients. This has a direct impact on our health and our immune system, which we need to rely on for keeping us healthy in a world with more and more vaccines and drugs to take the place of healthy eating and nutrients from food. Please, please, please don't assume it is just the stuff that you wash off, it literally goes deep down as most produce is sprayed at the stage where it is in flower or even bud, before the fruit or veg is even fully grown. Just like vaccination issues, it really pays to look much deeper and do your research and if you can't afford, at least do without junk food and alcohol and coffee for a day and see how much you save that could have been spent on organic food. Try and grow an organic lettuce on your windwsill and taste the difference. Your body will thank you. Here is a link and an article I wrote for the VRAN newsletter to explain more fully what I mean. Love and Health to you all! Ingrid http://www.whyorganic.org/page2_1.asp?main=2 & sub=1 Real health – from a mother’s perspective By Ingrid Glendinning, Scotland I do not claim to be a professional in any type of health care, but I know that motherhood and my love for gardening have taught me so much, especially about health, lessons, that I would have probably never learned otherwise. What does it mean to be truly healthy, to have REAL HEALTH? I came up with this term some time ago, feeling inspired by my love for organic gardening and my deep respect for Mother Nature. What is Real Health? For me it was this passion for organic gardening that helped me to define it. I like to compare the Immune System to the soil in an organic garden: if the soil is looked after well and receives all the nutrients and bacteria it needs to sustain healthy plant growth – then the plants that are grown in this soil will be stronger, healthier and far less susceptible to attack from pests and diseases (and even if they do get sick, they will recover much quicker and better in this kind of soil). It is the same with our Immune System and our body – it is the soil, the terrain which nourishes all our organs and allows them to function at an optimum level. Of course, it can only do this if it gets the right kind of balance f nutrients form day one of our life and many other elements like clean air and good living conditions. Mother Nature gives us Mothers a helping hand here: she has equipped us to feed our babies with breastmilk. Breastmilk, containing not only the perfect balance of nutrients for our babies’ growth, also contains many elements unique to human milk which help to develop and strengthen our babies’ Immune System and prepare it for protecting the baby from many pathogens. If a baby is exclusively breastfed and its Immune System left undisturbed then most breastfed babies will grow into strong, healthy children and adults. Only when this immature, underdeveloped immune system is interfered with with vaccines, wrong feeding and/or suppressive medicine, will its balance be tipped and long term problems may develop. I believe that every baby is born with a strong inner force; something Homeopathy calls The Vital Force. I can best describe this force in babies and children when observing them always getting up when falling, being full of energy and life when playing and an ability to always bounce back from physical and emotional damage. If we suppress and weaken this Vital Force, with vaccines, wrong feeding and suppressive medication, Real Health will be compromised and more difficult to achieve. The body will be less able to cope with illness. Scientists are still trying to understand fully how the Immune System works and develops. Again, I like to use a comparison with an organic soil, which produces healthy plants. This kind of nutrients rich, healthy and balanced soil is the basis to human health –from it grows nutrient rich plants which nourish our bodies. So we are literally linked to “the terrain”, the earth: keep it strong, give it what it needs and it will look after the plants just like a strong “inner terrain” (our Immune System) which will do the same for us, provided we give it what it needs and not weaken its functions. So, the next time you work in your garden, stop and think about the “black gold” that covers your hands. Stop and think how closely linked we humans are to it and how dependent our Health is on it. Let us get back to nature and enjoy something that is becoming a rarity: Real, true Health. I
Guest guest
Ingrid, Wow! You said it so well! And I will admit that with a family of five, we can't always eat organic, but we do try as much as possible. Like you said, it's just better for everyone involved (which means everyone on the planet). And we are fortunate enough to have a great garden that dh enjoys working. I challenge all on this group to even do taste tests with organic products. I promise you - you WILL taste the difference. Same with pastured meats, etc... They are so very much better tasting that you will not want to go back once you switch. Very well put, Ingrid! Sheri B. Guest guest
I meant to say " more resistant to attack from pests and diseases " , not " less " in my email below, sorry, I was rushing... Guest guest
Hi Sherri B -- While visiting family in Slovakia, I had home grown, fresh killed chicken -- tastes nothing like the chicken we buy here in the states -- and I do buy organic -- but then again organic chicken here tastes way better than the other stuff we can buy in the stores!
