Guest guest
It's not strange at all Sheri. I exposed my kids to CP 12 years ago (right before the vax became available). My neighbor's grandkids had it, and they were at the neighbor's house playing. So, off I went with my 2 kids and yes they ended up with chicken pox, too. They were 2 and 3 at the time, and I'm sooo glad we got it overwith then! ((Hugs)) from someone who DOES understand what you're trying to accomplish! Kay Mad that I can't get chicken pox for my kids! I'm so frustrated and a little bit angry. We had the chance, as I had posted earlier, to expose our children to chicken pox. Since the child had been vaccinated years ago, I'm thinking that this might be " real " chicken pox instead of a vaccine shed. Anyway, we're having neighbors over tomorrow night to watch the playoff game and they're bringing kids. I asked one of the moms with whom I'm the closest, what she thought of my exposing the kids prior to our get-together. While she agreed that they wouldn't be contagious until two days or so prior to showing symptoms, she thought it was not very nice to knowingly expose people's kids to CP at all. Period. So her take on it was that my exposing my dd to this - whether it was tomorrow night or any other night - was very uncool and downright rude. She said, " ly I don't want my kids missing a week of school " They're vaxed, by the way, but everyone agrees that the CP vax isn't worth much. I said to her, " You DO realize that 10 to 15 years ago, CP was no big freaking deal and that the primary reason for this vaccine was to reduce missed work days. " She agreed but agreed that she didn't want it to mess with their busy lifestyle either. What in goodness' name is so weird about trying to expose my kids to CP? Even my dh said he thought it was strange. So I called off the playdate today but I think we'll still get the kids together on Monday and to hell with the rest of them. I'm liable to lose quite a few friendships - yet again. I'm a force to be reckoned with at the moment. Sheri B.

Guest guest
Now this is just my thoughts, but I think that it would be safer for a child to contract chicken pox through an older person with shingles, wouldnt' it? Shingles is the same virus as chicken pox, it has just been dormant, so I would think that the strain would be wild, wouldn't it? I took my son to a " chicken pox party " when he was two. The child who had them, had gotten them from coming into contact with shingles. My son did have a bad case that got pretty scary, but I think that it was because he had been vaccinated up until he was " supposed " to get the MMR, and his immune system was compromised. We did end up taking him to the ER, just because he had a pock in his eye and I had read that they could be dangerous. Can you believe that the ER doctor wanted to put him on antibiotics?? He wanted to give him a shot of antibiotics, a script for oral antibiotics AND antibiotic eye drops! I told him NO on the shot and told him that I would take the scripts and use them if I felt that they were necessary. Needless to say, he wasn't very thrilled with my response and said that he was going to note in his chart that I wouldn't follow his medical advice, I told him that was fine. I ended up taking him to a " better " ER and the doctor there was in shock with what I told her. She did say that she thought it would be a good idea to give him the eye drops, just because she was afraid that he would scratch the pock and have an infected eye. Ok, I went a little off track there...... I am actively looking for someone to expose my three year old to. I guess it is time to start cruisin' the nursing homes! -- Sara Proud Mama to Colin 12/07/99 Jack 8/07/02 --------- Mad that I can't get chicken pox for my kids! > > > I'm so frustrated and a little bit angry. Guest guest
I guess I don't totally understand the reasoning behind trying to get the chicken pox - you then may have to deal with shingles later. I don't vaccinate my daughter; so I do tend to watch who she's around and what illness they may have. Although the only regular contact she has with other little ones is at church or swimming classes- I've never had chickenpox - so I guess selfishly, I don't really want a rip roaring case of them now at 36. (My daughter's ped seems to think I had a mild case because I've been around others when they had it) I kind of hope (and constantly provide the C - and acidophilus - and other healthy things) that her immunity would fight it off. Guest guest
Hi Cheryl, I feel the exact opposite about what germs other kids are carrying BECAUSE my children are not vaccinated making them inherently stronger than most other children. What will be will be. No matter what your vaccination status; it's a matter of suceptibility. Timing is everything. Guest guest
Yes, I really want them to have it because I think that they are part of childhood for a reason. I think that the basic childhood illnesses might even help boost the immune system. The older one is with the CP, the worse the cases usually are. I was 8 or so when I got them and had a fairly severe case, but my 2 year old sister hardly even had them but got immunity. I also feel that it's better for women to get them as children so they don't fear getting them while pregnant, even though that doesn't necessarily mean birth defects/miscarriage. It can, though. So those are my reasons, Sheri B. Guest guest
Oh, I wasn't referring to your comments, Sheri N. I meant her friends (and her dh) that think it's so strange to try and expose her kids to chicken pox. They've obviously bought into the scare tactics used by MDs and pHARMa that chicken pox is this awful, dreaded disease. I agree it's a bit different now since who knows what is the true strain of chicken pox or if it's the vaccine modified version? So many unknowns... Guest guest
People might consider starting a state by state group for exposing to chicken pox. Here is the one for Wisconsin WIPox/?yguid=160992215 Lucas
