Dorothy Scalco, Port St Lucie resident and Founder of The E.C.H.O.

Foundation, addresses Children's Autism at Forever Young Expo on January

14th at the Port St Lucie Community Center

Dorothy Scalco speaks from experience. Her son was diagnosed with Autism

at age 4. In less than 5 years, he is 80% normal. " I attribute his

recovery primarily to dietary changes and Classical Homeopathy, " she says.

Dorothy Scalco knew her son was not born autistic. She has clear memories

of her son playing peek-a-boo and saying words like " moon " and " boat " . So

when he stumbled into his own world, no longer wanting to play or talk, she

knew something was wrong.

Dorothy had suspected autism but put it far in the back of her mind until

one day a pediatrician mentioned autism. " It was quite devastating. But

what bothered me the most was the indifference " , she says. " I was simply

told no one knew what caused it and there was nothing I could do about it.

But I was not about to accept that. "

What Dorothy found were many pressures to medicate her son, but she wanted

to try a different approach. She felt medications were not a " cure " but a

managing tool. She did not want to " manage " her son's autism. She wanted

to " bring him back " .

Dorothy researched endlessly - looking for answers while her husband

worked 6 and 7 days a week to pay for the cost of their son's needs. The

first thing she discovered was a diet that removed all gluten and casein

proteins. At the age of 4½, after just 4 days on the diet, her son spoke

his first complete sentence. " It was an unbelievable moment and a night I

will never forget " , says Dorothy.

After seeing a transformation from eliminating certain foods, Dorothy's

way of thinking changed as well. " I knew this was no longer a mental

disorder but a biological one. " she says. " I knew more could be done " .

After 5 years of researching, traveling to lectures and volunteering with

The Autism Autoimmunity Project, Dorothy decided she needed to teach others

what she had learned. With the help of her husband and a handful of

passionate parents, she started the E.C.H.O Foundation. E.C.H.O. stands for

Educating on Children's Health Options. It has been a registered, non-

profit for a little more than a year. Their mission is to teach parents

about lifestyle changes and choices that they can make to improve and

maintain the health of their families.

" I was very connected to the autism world. What I was finding was that not

just autism was at an all time high. I was meeting a large number of

children suffering from ADD, asthma, allergies, and debilitating disorders

like Crohns and diabetes, " Dorothy states. " To me, the most disturbing

news of 2005 was when the Center for Disease Control (CDC) stated that 1 in

6 children have a behavioral and/or developmental disorders " .

The E.C.H.O. Foundation is an advocate for change in all children's diets.

It encourages parents to seek safe, noninvasive treatments and to take

responsibility for their child's health. " If a doctor tells you there is

nothing you can do, DON'T believe it " , Dorothy says. " You need to educate

yourself. You need to be informed. That is my goal, to empower the parents

and let them know they do have rights and they do have choices. "
