Bird flu kills Turkish children

Two children in Turkey have died from bird flu in the first known cases of

the virus outside of southeast Asia.

A 14-year-old boy named Mehmet Ali Kocyigit died last weekend followed by

his sister on Thursday. Their sibling has now begun to show flu symptoms.

The virus which killed the children has not yet been proven to be the H5N1

strain that has killed other humans.

Experts say bird flu will only spread rapidly if it's passed from human to

human but this has not yet happened.

This is the first confirmed case of bird flu in Turkey. The country is in

the bird migration path from Asia where the virus is thought to have started.

Meanwhile, reports say that six more people have been sent to hospital in

eastern Turkey with suspected bird flu, although this hasn't been

officially confirmed.

So far the disease appears only to have infected people who live or work

closely with birds.
