Alice in Global Vaccine Race

By Gavin King

Alice Springs hospital is part of a race against time to release the

world's first rotavirus vaccine.

A team of Australian scientists will use data and samples from the

hospital to develop the inoculation. But similar teams from the US and

Europe are also nearing completion of their own vaccines.

Hospital department of paediatrics head Rob Roseby said Central

Australian kids may be the first in Australia to receive the vaccine

after it is approved for use.

He said the Territory had nearly double the national average of

rotavirus cases.

Dr. Roseby said the Federal or NT Governments would need to fund the

rollout of the vaccine.

Alice Springs Hospital will send data and samples of the rotavirus

infections to a central reference laboratory at the Royal Children's

Hospital in Melbourne, which is tracking how rotavirus spreads

throughout Australia.

" The three vaccines being made by three different companies and they all

want to be the first ones out with it, " Dr. Roseby said.

" The vaccine needs to be approved first in Australia, and then there's

the question of who's going to fund it.

" One of our jobs is to make the community aware of the vaccine so they

can push for it, and to have enough information to provide the Federal

Government so they are able to make a decision on whether it's good

value or not. "

The vaccine - expected to be submitted for approval in 2006 - would be

given to infants under six months in three oral doses.

A rotavirus outbreak across Central Australia in October and November

stretched the children's ward to breaking point.

" What we know is that in other countries about 3 percent of children get

admitted to hospital with rotavirus in the first five years of life, "

Dr. Roseby said.

" In the NT, it's about 5 percent, and the length of stay in hospital is

double the national average.

“From the local research we’ve done we think that our kids are younger

and sicker when they’re admitted.

“We’re certainly hoping and expecting that the vaccine would have a

great impact on the community and health system here.”
