(the young woman with severe M.E. that I assist) has asked me to look into the causes for her muscle stiffness and spasms. She doesn't seem to have pain, just overwhelming stiffness. In addition, sometimes when we feed her soup with too much fresh, home-made turkey stock, within a minute, the muscles in her arms go into spasms. Any ideas? Guest guest
Hi , Magnesium deficiency is a definite possibility. Buy some magnesium in the form of chelated magnesium, magnesium aspartate, magnesium glycinate, magnesium orotate or magnesium taurate. Start with 100 mg (this si the weight of the actual magnesium, not the total compound) twice daily. Increase every few days, e.g. 200 bid, 300 bid, 400 bid, and find the highest dose that doesn't have a laxative effect. Sit on this dose for a few months and if magnesium deficiency is a factor, then clear benefits should be observed. Blake Stiffness and Spasms? Hi! Guest guest
Blake I found little effect from these chelates...... until I dissolved them in very hot water and drank them. I do not do well on the asparatate, by the way. My source of Magnesium in liquid form is now Milk of Magnesia.... works for me. Lots of people start with 1/2 to 1 tsp three to four times a day finding a dose just below bowel tolerance, stay there for a while and then increase again. Don't forget the vitamin B6 needed to help Mg do its tricks. mjh " The Basil Book " _http://foxhillfarm.us/FireBasil/_ (http://foxhillfarm.us/FireBasil/) Posted by: " Blake Graham " _blanket@... _ (mailto:blanket@...?Subject= Re:%20Stiffness%20and%20Spasms?) _galapagust _ (galapagust) Tue Sep 12, 2006 6:50 am (PST) Hi , Magnesium deficiency is a definite possibility. Guest guest
Organic turkey? If not, could be a reaction to feed additives? Guest guest
Aspartate is an excitatory amino acid, so I would think it will only increase spasms. Guest guest
Turkey has lots of tryptophan in it. How does milk affect her? While looking for answers, maybe massage will relieve the symptoms. Adrienne Stiffness and Spasms? Hi! Guest guest
aspartate in the brain is excitotoxic, although I don't think magnesium aspartate will have a significant effect on raising brain levels. Magnesium aspartate was one of the forms of magnesium studied for CFS, and found effective in many. Magnesium taurate is good too. Re: Stiffness and Spasms? Guest guest
Hi foxhillers, If you benefited from chelated magnesium disolved in hot water, this makes me wonder about your stomach acid levels and other aspects of digestion.
