Guest guest
I was told today my shoulder is frozen and must be manipulated loose under general anesthesia. Told him that I had heard some kinds of anesthesia must not be used, when you have CFIDS, he didn't even know what that was. Have been very depressed, partly because arm messed up, now this news, really upset. I wonder, can't they do it with local or a block or something? Wants muscles relaxed with the general anesthesia, apparently. Can't get word to Dr. Cheney until Monday on this, expect he's not going to like the idea. Surgeon said I wouldn't get the use of my right arm back without this, it has gotten worse and worse over the last six months since it first started hurting. any information appreciated, Helen

Guest guest
Helen, do not panic, and do not instantly believe surgeons. All they know about is cutting, so of course they advise cutting. And dire predictions are often just a way of manipulating patients. There's probably a zillion things to try. HAve you tried any? Surely you have? Adrienne anesthesia, please help I was told today my shoulder is frozen and must be manipulated loose under general anesthesia. Guest guest
> > I was told today my shoulder is frozen and must be manipulated loose > under general anesthesia. ***Hi Helen - I also have Frozen Shoulder at the present time. How long has your shoulder been frozen? It can take at least nine months to start unfreezing. I was told to expect this to last for two to three years in total. They have to use general anesthesia as it " totally " relaxes the muscles. If they only sedate you and give you pain meds, the muscles will still be tight and they won't be able to manipulate the arm. Did the surgeon warn you that there is the chance that they will break your arm bone with the manipulation? This should be a very " last " resort treatment. I've already decided that if for some reason my arm doesn't correct itself, I won't do the surgery. I would have to have a life threatening illness before I would agree to general anesthesia. Take care. Bernie
Guest guest
Helen, I don't know what you will do, but remember this: Dr. Cheney will give you very specific instructions for anesthesia. It is the Anesthesiologist that really matters there. They usually welcome specific info, for a successful event, and your doctor might too. If he/they have guidance for your case on that, the kind Dr. Cheney will provide, then he can concentrate on his part of the job...the shoulder. Other than that, Dr. Cheney will give you his opinion on other factors in your present condition that have relevance to the decision. In the past, with anesthesia guidelines, I did not have any problem with a couple of general anesth. surgeries. Admittedly, I'm now more leery, being older, with so many complications. The Surgeon does not nedd to know CFIDS per se, but the specific facts that relate to having surgery, which I think you/Cheney will be able to provide. I was turned down for a foot surgery, because of the unknowns of my CFIDS to surgeon, But I had not given him the guidance that is avaliable for surgery either, and am deciding whether to reintroduce the topic. Try to breathe, relax ---until you get more information. BW, Katrina > > I was told today my shoulder is frozen and must be manipulated loose > under general anesthesia. Guest guest
I just went through a frozen shoulder last year - completely couldn't move it. Luckily I found an orthopedist and physical therapist who has heard of CFIDS and fibromyalgia. Surgeon wanted to do surgery but only after it was unfrozen. Only had physical therapy, no drastic release under anesthesia. First thing therapist had me do was just bend over and let the arm hang down-lean over a chair. As the arm hangs, just try to swing it back and forth and then in circles. Do this several times a day for several days. Amazingly just letting gravity do it's thing, my arm that didn't move started moving and the worst of the pain diminished. Therapist then had me start on a lot of exercises, slowly over the course of a few months, along with ultrasound and electric stimulation treatments, he then would manipulate my arm slowly and relatively gently. Since he had dealt with CFIDS patients, he knew not to push, and pretty much let me go at my own speed alone much of the time. However, it was the exercises that he gave me that made the difference. I'd do them at home as often as I could. He knew that I couldn't do 20-30 repetitions - so allowed my to do 5 at a time, and change to the next. After 3 1/2 months, I had 90% movement back, no pain, and never went back to surgeon for cutting - except for one cortisone shot near the end for a bit of a breakthrough. If you want to know the list of exercises I did to release the shoulder, let me know. I wouldn't have surgery nor go under anesthesia at this time. Guest guest
Please try a good myofacial person before you get into a surgery type thing. The aren't massage therapists. They really pull and manipulate the joints. yildiz <yildiz22@...> wrote: I would trust more to someone who is an expert on manipulations. Wish you the best. Guest guest
This may or may not be appropriate, but I had shoulder surgery almost 6 years ago. A 3 hour chunk of time under anesthesia. I had a crash that hasn't ended yet. I went in feeling very positive, was very ready for it and have not recovered to this day. I was operating at about 60% energy and wellness and now am housebound and the shoulder bone spur has come back. Please think about this. I've mentioned myofacial release. It might be worth a try before the drastic route of surgery. kattemayo <kattemayo@...> wrote: Helen, I don't know what you will do, but remember this: Dr. Cheney will give you very specific instructions for anesthesia. I dragged myself out to fax Cheney's office today about all of this, hope he gets it Monday if he is in. Downloaded a manual from a physical therapist that has some arm exercises, like these pendulum ones you describe. He said do the ones that don't hurt and there are a few I can do. Very weak today, can hardly walk, no way I can tolerate general anesthesia. Wonder if this thing could be done with just a block? But wanting to try other things first, getting acupuncture/moxa on it. Hard because not sleeping well, then very weak. But have to be well enough to do physical therapy exercises afterwards or all for naught. appreciate your input very much, gives me some hope, much needed at moment, have terrible bout of depression, bad family genes for that, Cheney said maybe getting more oxygen to my brain was shutting my neurotransmitters down in defense, great. so I got out my Mood Cure book, going to take tyrosine, D-phenylanine, in addition to tryptophan I already take, lots more fish oil, and push my neurontin back up since it saved me three years from last horrible depression was in shock yesterday, helps to hear someone can recover from frozen shoulder without such drastic measures, physical therapist I got ebook from says manipulation under anesthesia can cause more inflammation, Cheney said inflammation goes out of control in CFIDS, a little injury goes haywire, like what happened to me this year Helen > > > > I would trust more to someone who is an expert on manipulations. > > Wish you the best. > > Nil > > anesthesia, please help > > > > > > > > > I was told today my shoulder is frozen and must be manipulated > loose > > > under general anesthesia. Guest guest
Oh Helen, So sorry about this. It's like those of us that can't afford any more assaults on our bodies get more heaped on. Let those tears flow. Studies have shown that there's a chemical in tears that isn't in any other body fluid and speculation is that is relieves depression to a degree. Even if it is in your family history being this weak and ill and in pain and still having to think well enough to make a plan can be overwhelming. Leading directly to depression. Hang on tight for this wild ride. All the best, Edy helen9jora <helenjora@...> wrote: thank you and everyone else who wrote, very much appreciate it, very upset and severely depressed here. Guest guest
Bernie: I hurt it in February, has gotten slowly worse, frozen since May, and has gotten worse since then. Surgeon said it would be all better when I woke up, but I got on net and found that it would hurt like hell, bone might break, muscles and tendons might tear, etc. Surgeon just spent a few minutes with me, tried to tell him about CFIDS and diastolic heart failure, he wants more information. Sees me sitting there, doesn't realize how weak I am. Thanks for answering my question about general anethesia. I was wondering they couldn't use a block and muscle relaxers instead. Inclining more to trying the physical therapy at home and whatever my accursed insurance company will allow. They cut me off after ten visits and a slight improvement turned into something that got a lot worse. The ultrasound was helping at first and the arm would go over my head. Thought I had rotator cuff tear but MRI says just bursitis, but lack of use has gone into adhesive capsulitis. Hope you do better, Helen > > > > I was told today my shoulder is frozen and must be manipulated loose > > under general anesthesia. > > > > ***Hi Helen - I also have Frozen Shoulder at the present time. Guest guest
I think cutting on living body requires a certain sort of insensitivity- and very narrow focus. And those guys, being godlike after all, think it's perfectly ok to lie to pts. for their own good. Of course there must be many fine exceptions. Guest guest
could be, what you say, but if a bone broken, need a good surgeon this procedure isn't surgery, no cutting, they just pull on your arm and bust up the adhesions while you are unconscious I said, won't it hurt like hell when I wake up and he said it wouldn't but I read about it on net and pain does increase, also can break things hell with it, I decided to pursue other means, thanks to all of you who wrote to me someone last night told me of a great massage therapist, going to call her, going to do exercises that don't hurt, downloaded an ebook from Schiff in Columbus, might go see him when I feel up to a two hour drive, it's a shoulder manual he says people can get worse inflammation from this anesthesia manipulation since Cheney told me we have runaway inflammation, a really bad idea hope he responds to my fax soon, doubt he will be in favor of idea taking a bunch of fish oil, that is supposed to be good for inflammation, as well as depression, article about it in Life Extension magazine just came although some say must have much more EPA than DHA in it, not sure about that, anyone know? like is EPA good for depression and DHA for pain? Guest guest
> > > Bernie: > > I hurt it in February, has gotten slowly worse, frozen since May, and > has gotten worse since then. ***Hi Helen - If you only hurt your arm in February and it has been frozen since only May, it is far too soon to be talking about surgical manipulation. It sounds like your arm is progressing through Frozen Shoulder much faster than mine is. It goes through three stages in total. The first stage is the initial injury through to your arm hurting and this is usually at least several months up till eight or nine months. Then the second stage is the actual frozen period which is usually around five to nine months. The third stage is when it unfreezes. According to my physio, this is the longest and most painful stage. I would recommend going to a physio, even if only once, to learn some exercises that you can do that will help the arm. After only two days of exercise, I was able to lift my arm considerably higher than the previous day. You need to be icing down your arm and shoulder several times a day. Also adding heat to it several times a day helps to speed up the healing. Take care. Bernie
Guest guest
> > I think cutting on living body requires a certain sort of insensitivity- and very narrow focus. ***Hi Adrienne - There is absolutely no cutting involved with manipulation for frozen shoulder. The only reason it is considered a surgical procedure is because the doctor " must " use general anesthesia in order to unfreeze the arm. Without the 100% total relaxation that general anesthesia provides, the doctor would not be able to get the arm to move beyond a certain point. Thank God there are men and women who are willing to become surgeons and cut on living bodies, otherwise, there would be a lot of people dieing on a daily basis. Take care.
