The following is a list of possible causes of sleep disturbances in CFS. Many

inter-relate with each other.

Neurochemical imbalances:

-Low melatonin

-Low serotonin

-Low dopamine

-High glutamate

-Low GABA

Hormone imbalances:

-Progesterone deficiency in women

-Excess estrogen

-Estrogen deficiency

-Adrenal insufficiency

-High night time cortisol

-Low Growth Hormone

General:

-Restless leg syndrome

-Pain

-Sleep apnea

-Medication/drug side effects

-Phase shift disorder

-Noise sensitivity

-Night urination (due to diabetes insipidus)

Nutritional imbalances:

-Low magnesium, iron & calcium

-Low vitamin B1, B5 & B6

Toxicological:

-Lead poisoning

-Mercury poisoning

-Mold exposure

-Environmental illness

As most people with CFS have a 'mixed bag' of a number of these, it is no wonder

99%+ of people with CFS have sleep disturbances.

Thanks for this! If you know of specific tests that would help

narrow these down, that would be great. I am particularly interested

in testing for the Neurochemical imbalances.

It has amazed me that mainstream medicine is so quick to prescribe

SSRI's, for example, even though it doesn't seem to have a standard

way to test serotonin levels before doing so.

I saw Braverman and had the brain testing and etc last summer for three

days. Very informative and helpful.

He also has written several books including Healing Nutrients Within (amino

acids with Carl Pfeiffer) and The Edge Effect.

I only wish I could afford his full protocol designed for me and to go back

for follow up appointments. I stayed at the hostel at the YMCA not far from

the United Nations.

Hi Shakerz25,

Melatonin can be fairly easily tested via night time salivary melatonin

levels. Neurotransmitters are more difficult. There are some urine and blood

tests, but i'm convined they are definitive. Dr. Braverman in NY uses

complex brain scans. He also uses symptoms analysis, which is what I use. See:
