Hi all,

Glad to have found you! Looking to learn a lot from those with

experience. I have tons of questions. Hope you don't mind.

Our ped referred us to Cranial Technologies. We went for a visit and

they suggeted PT for the head tilt and the DOC band for what they

called " moderate " plagiocephaly. Now here's my question(s):

How did you come to find your child needed treatment? Was it through

your ped? Were you referred to a plastic surgeon or neurosurgeon? Did

you get the band from those doctors? I guess I'm wondering if I

should get a sceond opinion before diving straight into the Band. My

husband worries that they are just trying to sell us the band.

Any advice? I'm feeling overwhelmed!

Welcome ABJ

I am farely to this myself. My daughter Mya 8 months old has only had

her DOC band for 4 days. To answer your questions We were first seen

by our ped and she refered us to a different ped at our hospital (we

are military)and that ped then set Mya up for physical therapy for

torticollis and also referred us to see a craniofacial plastic

surgeon. She told us it would be in Mya's best interest to get her a

DOC band even though the military wont pay for it. SHe told us she

could not write the prescription for the DOC band so wed have to go

to the craniofacial plastic surgeon and get his assessment and he

would be the one to give her a yes or no for the DOC band and write

the prescription. SO we did that and he told us Mya did have severe

plagiocephaly and torticollis. And he wrote the prescription for her

DOC band. And so we went ahead with the casting and that brings us

up till now where she is in her band and we just cant wait to see

that head of hers to start to round out. So thats our story. I dont

feel in any way that we were just sold the band for no reason. My

daughters head was in desperate need of something and the band can

fix her poor little crooked head. Hope Ive helped you some. Any

other questions feel free to ask away!!

ANd again Welcome!!

Hi ABJ & welcome to our group, we're also glad you found us!

The head tilt your son has is called torticollis. Tort. is often a

leading cause of plagiocephaly. A lot of our members children have

also had torticollis & I'm sure they will offer you stretching tips &

other valuable information. I'm going to answer your questions

below:

A). My daughter's plagio began in utero & was quite severe, our ped.

noticed it ar her 2 wk chk up. We then were sent to get xrays to

rule out craniosynostosis (premature fusing of the skull bones), then

after those tests were thankfully negative, we were referred to a

ped. neurosurgeon. The ped. neuro then told us it was our decision

to band or not, we waited & tried repositioning for a bit but

unfortunately had no success with it. We then went ahead with the

band.

A) I have been a member of this board for 1.5 yrs already, and can

honestly tell you, Cranial technologies is a wonderful group of

people. I have heard of stories that they have NOT banded a child

because they felt the case was too mild. They will only recommend a

band if they feel your child truly needs one. I cannot say enough

great things about Cranial Technologies.

Of course it never hurts to get a 2nd opinion though. Does your

pediatrician suggest banding your son also?

This is all very overwhelming to us parents. Do whatever your gut

tells you to. How old is your son?

Welcome again, we're glad you found us :)
