CFS triggers.

Dear list,

I am putting together a list of factors which trigger sudden-onset CFS.

1. Infections (viral, bacterial and parasitic)

2. Toxic exposures

3. Excessive physical activity

4. Having just had a baby

5. Having an injury or surgery

6. Adverse vaccination reaction (particularly hepatitis B)

7. Blood transfusion

8. Long airplane flights

Am I missing any obvious ones?

Perhaps any/most major life stresses

moving/relocating

losing a job

death of a loved one

surviving a natural (or manmade) disaster

basically anything that triggers the fight or flight response

repeatedly or over an extended period of time?

I think this is more true now than 50 years ago with our modern food

that is mostly devoid of nutrients and other changes to our

environment that are done for good but may have unintended and

unrecognized consequences (ie chlorine in drinking water, fluoride,

toxic environment, fast food culture....)

Dear Blake,

Major or multiple traumatic events.

Car accident/whiplash - I guess you have included in injury or surgery?

Best regards,

9. Excessive emotional or mental strain (death in family, divorce, loss

of job, extreme work stress, family issues, etc.)

10. High EMF exposure (particularly Cell phones)

The only problem with these triggers is that alone none of these will

cause CFS in a healthy person without the various predispositions that

are now being identified. Just looking at triggers misses that

important part of the illness.

Also, I had exposure to many of these at various times in my life but

did not get CFS. Then I had a lot of them all at once, and got CFS.

That is another confound.

Hi Blake and everyone,

I think that the SUDDEN ONSET part of the question is being missed by some

people.

Maybe " excessive physical activity " should be removed from the list? Do

athletes who come down with CFS have a sudden onset or do they find it builds up

over weeks or months?

Can a parasite cause sudden onset or would that take time to build up the bad

effects?

How many people with a SUDDEN ONSET (i.e well one day and then forever with

CFS) had a trigger other than a virus?

Kindest regards,

Annette

Vaccines should be one. I got sick after I got many vaccines, when I

joined the military.

Everybody I know with Gulf War Syndrome seems to have started out

this same way.

Another addition: auto accidents, especially those that cause severe

whiplash. My illness began with a whole year of really awful stuff,

but being in two rear-ender accidents within a single week was

definitely one of the biggies.

Another one might be prolonged antibiotic exposure. I was on daily

low-dose antibiotics for two years before my onset.

I have CFS-fibro (but call it by latin name Myalgiac encephalomyelitis

as I am so damn sick of what most think when they hear 'chronic

fatigue')however it was either gradual for me OR I didn't quite catch

on right away...

I CAN confirm the 'after childbirth' point as this was how it happened

to a friend in the early '90's. She was fortunate in that she was

diagnosed rather soon, and that it sort of seemed like her case was

mild; she did nap each day with her two kids, but other than that,

seeme to do well and did have remission a time after that. I remember

she was diagnosed within a month or two ofher son'e birth.

GEOPATHIC STRESS

It's very real. My onset came on with a number of earthquakes in the

immediate vicinity of where I live.

A few things about Earthquake exposure:

A few years after my 1st CFS onset, but then managing to push/force through Life

and work, I was again worsening and seeking answers to the still un-diagnosed

mystery.

Then, I was near the epicenter when the 7.1 Loma Prieta Earthquake struck. I was

in isolated area with a baby in my care and a house falling apart.

A Trauma counselor said I was " massively exposed " .

I was, and nerves were certainly on edge.

But, during the hundreds of after shocks, I remember trying to explain to my

Dad that I was not only having a stress reaction, but I could feel something

unfamiliar that was very physically disorienting and made me wonder about

" gasses " released or magnetic field or something. (had Zero actual Scientific

knowledge about it). That was in October. By early 90, I had so many systems in

crisis...severe infections, dental crisis, brain scramble, weakness, hair

falling out, muscle, joint, nerve pain...every cell in my body felt like it was

disintegrating.

When I later entered an illness support group, and met others with CFS, all

agreed that tho aready ill, after the Earthquake was severe decline. (None have

ever recovered to pre-Earthquake state).

We could see that the trauma/stress could have done it, but others also said

there was a physical/environmental element present.

I had forgotten about this until you brought it up. I have never followed

through with what was at play then, environmentally. But I have a terriblly

physically disoriented reaction to Earthquakes, not present before CFS.

B. Blake Levitt talks about this in her book, Electromagnetic Fields.

I believe I posted a quote about it a while back. Actually, when I

originally went to see my alternative doctor, Dr. Yayama, he was able

to detect this somehow with his Zero Search machine.

I was north of Half Moon Bay at the time, in a house less than two

miles from the faultline. And, yeah, I went straight to bed for three

months afterward -- though I chalked that up to being six weeks

pregnant. I literally slept for the next three months solid. Never

thought of it as being related to the quake, but it's possible.

On the other hand, I'd already been seriously sick for four years at

that point.

Sara,

That must have been a tough time for you after the earthquake and feeling so

bad. I am wondering, and I hope you don't mind my asking, but is that baby

okay?

Baby girl is fabulous. Turned 16 last week, looks like Liv Tyler,

gifted filmmaker and artist, natural-born psychologist, and simply

one of the most wise, observant, and wry human beings I've ever been

honored to know. Raising her has been a completely joy.

So sorry you have to live in an area where you have to worry about

that. I know stress always makes my CFS and Fibro. worse.

Wonderful!!!! Good for both of you, Sara. BTW the doc in Vancouver, Dr. B is

using antibiotics. He may be a naturopath but he is also somewhat mainstream

when he thinks it makes sense.

Do you have grounding pads or other ways of getting grounded? Being

grounded is almost as good as EMF blocking sometimes for me.

Kurt,

I've been looking for non-rubber sole shoes. My alternative doctor

and everyone in his clinic where " zoori " or straw sandals. When I go

into see him next I am planning on inquiring where I can get a pair.

Besides that, I have grounded the silver-lined mesh that we have

covering out windows by connecting it to a copper wire and then

running it outside to a metal pipe inserted into the ground. I don't

like to go outside here because the amount of electrosmog is pretty

high but when I get a chance to get out in the country and in nature

I try to practice Qi gong in my bare feet - and that makes me feel

pretty good.
