Guest guest
I read that turmeric can be helpful, but also harmful. If my brain is working (No comment!) I think I read that it inhibits the phase one liver detoxification system? So...I guess my question is...what does that mean? How do we know if our phase one is working, or overworking, and the same with phase two? How do we know if turmeric might be right for us??? Thanks, Dan

Dan, you could get a liver function test, that will show the phase I / phase II balance. In many cases of a person who is toxic, phase I is over-active. This puts more toxins into circulation. Therefore the turmeric may have a double benefit. I am one of those with fast phase I and slow phase II and I understand this is typical. --Kurt
Guest guest
I have noticed that Cucurmin thins my blood too much . . . women may want to be careful with their menstral cycle. It is known to be a blood thinner. Sue T " Kurt R. " <kurt@...> wrote: Dan> I read that turmeric can be helpful, but also harmful. If my brain is working (No comment!) Guest guest
***I read that turmeric can be helpful, but also harmful. If my brain is working (No comment!) I think I read that it inhibits the phase one liver detoxification system? So...I guess my question is...what does that mean? Thanks, Dan*** I think that Turmeric is the best kept secret in the whole equation of CFS. When you have been raising your glutathione levels for conisderable amounts of time. Your phase 1 will no doubt still be over revving so once you have raised glutathione levels you can look at adding Turmeric. Guest guest
It is my understanding it has nothing to do with phase 1, it only increases phase 2 glucuronidation and bile flow. It elevates cysteine, if you are high in that it makes you a lot worse. It is also a COX-2 inhibitor like Vioxx and Celebrex and Bextra. There are significant amounts in yellow curry. It also gives you a VERY acid stomach. Andy > ***I read that turmeric can be helpful, but also harmful. If my brain is > working (No comment!) Guest guest
Well, from the " Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine " , the following are listed as " Inhibitors of Phase 1 Detoxification " : Benzodiazapenes (valium, klonopin, xanax, etc.) antihistamines Cimetidine Ketoconazole Sulfalphenazole Foods: Naringenin from grapefruit juice CURCUMIN FROM TURMERIC Capsaicin from chili peppers Eugenol from clove oil It does go on to say however that turmeric also stimulates Phase 2...which is " very useful in preventing cancer " ... thanks for your reply! d. > > It is my understanding it has nothing to do with phase 1, it only > increases phase 2 glucuronidation and bile flow. > > It elevates cysteine, if you are high in that it makes you a lot worse. > > It is also a COX-2 inhibitor like Vioxx and Celebrex and Bextra. > > There are significant amounts in yellow curry. > > It also gives you a VERY acid stomach. > > Andy > > > ***I read that turmeric can be helpful, but also harmful. It also stimulates the production of glutathione by raising the activity of glutamate cysteine ligase, the rate-limiting enzyme for synthesis of glutathione, and it also increases the activity of glutathione transferase and glutathione peroxidase enzymes, as well as quinone reductase, another Phase II enzyme. > > So...I guess my question is...what does that mean? It evaluates the metabolism of caffeine, which depends on a couple of Phase I enzymes, and it also evaluates the activity of four of the Phase II pathways, and then evaluates the ratios of Phase I to Phase II pathways. > > Thanks, > > Dan > ***Rich
Guest guest
You will find an accurate list in my book Amalgam Illness, or possibly on a med school website. The list below leaves much to be desired.... Guest guest
Turmeric as well as every other substance that had anticoagulant properties has the potential for cause adverse effect in some circumstances. There is a coagulation cascade where one substance is broken down into another, then broken down into still others. The typical CFIDSer with a coagulationd defect has one of more dams restricting the flow from one to the other. If turmeric has the same effect where the dam is -- then this is ideal, because the cascade becomes normalize. If the turmeric is before the dam, it may increase the coagulation products involved. If it is after the dams -- then then is a risk that it would cause too much blood thinning. I suspect that other body pathways also exhibit this cascade aspects -- it is just that coagulation is well established in the conventional medical community. > > I read that turmeric can be helpful, but also harmful.
