Guest guest
Why I decided to purchase a mattress cover After reading the previously posted articles, plus one from the actual researcher that I can't seem to find again, I decided that the theory had a lot of merit. Here are my reasons: * Even if the theory is wrong, the mattress cover offers an allergy barrier. My husband has bad allergies, so I'd like to protect my children from allergens. * Even if the gases don't cause SIDS, they are still present. I'm not terribly crazy about my children (or me!) breathing that stuff in. * I have a used mattress. According to the toxic gas theory, the longer a mattress is used, the more fungus builds up, and thus more gases. Proponents feel that this is why, statistically, second and subsequent children are more likely to die from SIDS. * In the US, the " Back to Sleep " campaign encourages parents to place babies on their back to sleep. They are unsure why this seems to reduce the risk of SIDS, but according the the TGT, the gases are heavier than air and rest on the surface of the mattress, so if a baby is on his tummy, he is breathing in more toxins because his mouth is close to the surface. * I have heard so much lately in the news about " sick houses " and " sick offices " from toxins and mildew/fungi/molds that are present. If they make adults get sick, and they are present in mattresses, what must the effect be on babies? * The theory fits in very well with the reduced risk factors that I've read about, including vaccinations. It seems to me that vaccination increases SIDS risk in two ways - the vaccine itself (toxins, reactions) and the risk of heat from fever inducing more toxic gases from the mattress. * Sprott (the main researcher for this theory) has come up with a way to wrap your mattress to protect your child from gases. He tells you how to do it yourself, and he also has designed a mattress cover for those who would rather just order one. " No baby sleeping on a Sprott polyethylene protected mattress has died from SIDS in over six years. From a statistical standpoint approxamitely 250 babies have not died from SIDS. " There are a lot more reasons, but they are explained in the articles above. I purchased my mattress cover from this company: http://www.babysake.com/BabeSafeUSA.htm violet~* __________________________________ - PC Magazine Editors' Choice 2005 http://mail.
