Guest guest
I have to agree with i (I'm laughing out loud at your comment, BTW It shouldn't even BE a discussion! How the hell else did women feed their babies before bottles were invented like 100 years ago? Sheesh! > tHAT is the stupidest topic I have ever heard. It shouldn't even be an > " issue " to discuss. Guest guest
Not to mention, breasts weren't so sexualized in today's society and if more women breastfed, we wouldn't even be TALKING about this! Is the next topic going to be " Bottle Feeding in Public - Is is OK " ?!!! > Exactly! It really makes you wonder how we got to this point and where > we are heading as a society. Guest guest
What the heck do they think boobs are for??? Very strange how some people find it disgusting. I mean they put sexy lingery on them for heir men, yet the thought of breastfeeding is repulsive. I dont' get it. Me - I LOVE it! He said, and I qoute, " Boobies are for love and care " . If that doesn't say it all, I don't know what does. Out of the mouths of babes............... Guest guest
Thanks for the sharing the info. Its been national breastfeeding week here in Canada. Our local hospital was supporting a breastfeeding day at our local shopping mall in the food court. Basically women and their babes were welcome at lunchtime to nurse in support of breastfeeding week and show people its not something to be hidden or ashamed of. I have had to nurse my little guy in public places and so far haven't received any negative comments...but I know of others, friends and family who have, and its really sad. Breastfeeding can be made to seem so isolating - I hope the stigma changes. Tania Re: Breastfeeding debate on Dr. Phil Friday > That is beautiful Anita > > > >> > > Exactly! Guest guest
Tania, I remember being very comfortable breastfeeding in public, though I went out so rarely. I also remember being discreet about it. Like anything else, there is no need to be 'in your face' about it in an effort to prove ones point. It sort of defeats the purpose and really turnes people off. Anita " Tania A. Heinemann " <taniar@...> wrote: Thanks for the sharing the info. Its been national breastfeeding week here in Canada. Guest guest
I agree, I am discreet nursing, just feels more comfortable to me, tho I must admit I prefer nursing in the nursing rooms, I do find people stare...and not always in what feels like a good way!! Guest guest
I caught that preview too- looks good! One of the women said it right- " It's not my right to breastfeed, it's my child's right to eat " . I agree. One woman also said, " I don't care what anyone else thinks! " And Dr. Phil told her, " Well thanks for being honest! " Those of course were just clips. I'm one of those that doesn't care either. I'm discreet- unlike my cousin who has VERY larg breasts and whips one out- totally exposing her to EVERYONE to feed the baby. I believe there are ways to do it tactfully, when no one else would know what you're doing- except a mom who's breastfed- or a dad who's S.O. has. My daughter is 13 and SHE even gets mad when she sees things on TV about people being upset by others breastfeeding! You go girl!!! I only nursed her for 10 months and I dried up, but it's no big deal in our house! My son bf til he was 1, and we're expecting twins here anyday, so they'll both be bf. I'm glad I could instill those beliefs in my daughter while she's younger- before she's a mom someday! I saw a woman at the store when my son was little yet. She had a newborn, and it looked like she was trying to find an emptly isle in the infant dept. to possibly bf- her daughter was SCREAMING, and she looked a litle stressed. I wanted so bad to bf my son and walk by her, but he was sleeping and I didn't want to wake him up- just to show her that it's ok! Yep.... it makes NO DIFF. to me where I am- if my babies are hungry, they WILL be fed! I have never gotten a rude comment, and don't really care if I ever do! I think the show will be interesting. I don't think Dr. Phil is against it, but I think he's trying to bring awareness that it IS natural, and if done properly, it's great! Not sure. I'm anxious to see it though! Guest guest
One of the members of Thebabywearer forum was called in as the BF expert for Doc Phil - she was on vacation and couldn't do it. She's actually relieved because Dr Phil has sandwiched it between some really odd topics. I can't think it's going to go well at all. I am *not* a Dr Phil fan, for the most part but I hope (for the sake BFing) that he doesn't deride it. I have no problem with BFing in public - I just would appreciate some tact. I'm due with twins any day now, too!! I will feed them when they need it no matter where I am or who I am with. I just don't want to start a " controversy " at the grocery store!! lol Clean up on Aisle 3 takes on a whole new meaning! There are too many people out there that get offended by just about anything and will give you grief over it. For some reason BFing in public seems to equate with strippers and fallen women for far to many people! I really do know people with this attitude! " Rubbing " it in their faces won't help the NIP cause - it could very well hurt it. Tactful NIP will ease the way for better legislation and less animosity from the stooopid people put there! At least I can always hope!! Kim

Guest guest
There's needs to be a law against unhealthy formula bottle feeding in public, or anywhere, because it really is child abuse. Bottle feeding offends me and makes me uncomfortable. Dan
Guest guest
I'll add my 2 cents as well... lol I'm well versed in this as I've been nursing continuously for close to 7 yrs now... and will probably be tandem nursing by the end of the year. I have 'big ole boobs' and sometimes you can't help exposing yourself, no matter what size you are. However, what I've found is that its actually easier for me to be discreet with the size of my boobs... I lay my child on my lap and just lean over a little, pull up shirt, and voila'! Easy. Although, I've had to nurse standing up in aisles too... but, like pretty much everyone else has said, I've never gotten any negative flack from others in public. But, I do NIP discreetly, ONLY because that's my personality. I think that NIP should be so ordinary that you don't look twice when you see someone doing it. I'll try to remember to watch Dr. Phil today and will most definitely write in to the show if I feel the need to! lol Alison, sahm in south central Louisiana (luckily, got through both Katrina and Rita unscathed!), 7 months pregnant, extended breastfeeding, co-sleeping, baby-wearing, non-vaccinating sahm to 2 wonderful girls: Calista (2-13-99) and Ursula (12-22-02) and pregnant for a boy! Guest guest
I find it extremely bazaar that in America we can walk down any check out stand and see half a dozen half naked women with most of their breasts exposed in a vulgar manner (at children's eye level!) and no one seems bothered by that. Yet when a woman provides nourishment for her baby in the most natural, loving way - it is seen as vulgar and disgusting to many. ODD and SAD! My dd was a very matter of fact nurser (latched on, ate, then left them alone) and weaned herself at one year. Now, I am bfing my 20 month old son and he LOVES his nay - nay's. When he nurses he likes to have access to both sides at once so he can switch from one side to the other whenever he chooses. He also likes to fondle one while nursing on the other. I try to be discreet because of my modesty, but I am certainly not going to deny my son his right to eat at will because of my modesty or anyone elses uncomfortable feelings. We have bfed in many different places - including sitting on the floor in the isles of shopping centers. It's so cute - when ds gets really tired he does his nursie yoga - he likes to stand up and nurse while I'm sitting down. He kind of gets in the " down dog " position so he's basically standing on his head nursing, then he lifts one of his legs backwards. Soo cute! My Mom and both of my sisters - who are uncomfortable with attachment parenting - laugh at him and then try to offer me advice on how to " break the habit " . SHEESH!! I don't tell them how to eat! I kinda got off on a tangent - sorry. Anyway, I agree that it shouldn't even be an issue. Lots of people think it's cute when animals nurse - what's the difference with humans? Some people can be so . . . I can't even think of a word to use! Lori Mom to Anneke, 7 and Steller 20 months Norse Mewsic Norwegian Forest Cats Natural cats reared naturally!
