There used to be two ways of losing weight – the quick, fast, dysfunctional way or the healthy way. Now with all the weight loss surgeries, there are three ways. Since the invention of the deep fryer, men and women have been trying the unhealthy ways to lose weight – diet pills, shots, laxatives, and bulimia to mention a few. The other night, I was watching an old movie on Movie Classics, and in that movie, there was a gentleman who weighed over 300 pounds. He was on a diet in every restaurant scene in the movie! It always showed him eating carrot and celery sticks, and there were lots of jokes made about it. This movie came out in 1947!

Since the invention of the salad, men and women have been trying the healthy ways to lose weight – cutting calories, cutting fat grams, watching sugar and salt intake, drinking water, and exercising. And now the third and very popular way to drop pounds is weight loss surgery. That`s when you have a procedure that tinkers with your insides and decreases the size of your stomach so it doesn`t hold very much food.

Now those are the ways to lose weight. If you begin your journey needing to lose 100, 200, 300 or more pounds, I have to tell you, you`ve not only abused your body, but you`ve abused your skin. Every single time you overeat, you stretch your skin out. It`s amazing how far the skin can expand. When you lose weight through unhealthy diets and surgery, there`ll be lots and lots of hanging skin. When you lose weight by eating healthy and exercising, there still will be skin hanging, but not as much.

Every week I get letters from people who have lost a tremendous amount of weight, and they are very depressed about the loose skin. They ask me what they should do about it. Well, there are two options I tell them. They can have the skin surgically removed or live with it and dress accordingly.

If you have quite a bit of weight to lose, please, please lose it in a healthy manner! Eat balanced meals and make time to work out every day. Every time you want to overeat, just think about your skin stretching and how that skin will look when you get down to your desired weight.
