the most important thing is to take care of your back right now. Did your doctor offer any thoughts? will it just be calorie watching for now? What did he say about swimming? I know it's hard to keep motivated when you want to do something but can't. But for now - you have to take care of your back. small 5-10 minute strolls just to get in the habit may be a good thing. how many small strolls are you allowed a day? Live, Love, Laugh

hey guys. I went the dr. last wed for my post-op visit almost 2wks after surgery. i was a little discouraged and have been really down about how to keep going with things now. I guess i've jus been overwhelmed by the discouraging news about my back and my activity levels. I HAD been really excited about being able to go for walks, and even though it drained me, it felt good to be up an doing something to better myself. I had been going with the original plan of starting to walk after surgery and keep increasing my walking time. I even walked 3-4 blocks before my apointment. BUT, my dr explained that the surgery had been more extensive than they originally thought it would be, and so the work on the disc was more than they thought. Also the discs are starting to calcify, and so Wed, he explained that because of all this I have to REALLY take it easy. I really need to lay down for most of the time except for to go to classes

and back to laying down. I can do the walking needed for regular daily life stuff, going to classes and then not much more than that. he stressed that IF i was up to it, not more than 5-10 min a day and at MAX 15 of strolling and not strenuous walking. All this for about six more weeks, and i cant go back to work for that time either. Man. my first thought was, "how and i gonna get the weight off now?" even in that short time after my walk, 1hr or so, he explained that was why i've been wiped out and so sore after my walks, cuz everything is still so fragile. The soreness continued (wed was the longest distanced i'd walked postop and prob for about 4-5 mos.) i felt like i'd been beat with a stick by thurs morn. and it took me till fri to recover from that. ;)SO i'm kinda lost. I dont know what I can do knowing my activity level is gonna be next to nuthin for SIX more weeks. Im kinda overwhelmed cuz I don't want ot put off getting healthy for six weeks, it

seems like a waste. I am goin to go for a 5min walk today and do that for a week. do any of ya'll have ideas?

be longer than 6 weeks because you could cause

more problems.

I had both knees operated on on July 3rd this

year. I am doing the physicalo therapy but I am

still having pain and swelling. I wish I had the

motivation to want to do more but it hurts. i

was told it would be 6-8 months before I am

totally healed and feeling better. It hurts to

stand up and sit down. I do not like to get up

because it hurts so all I do it sit and do

nothing.

So please do as the doctor says.

does it hurt sitting as well? I only ask because there are sitting exercies out there. PBS has a shhow called sit and be fit. you're absolutley right - the doctor knows best. I hope the 6-8 months pass quickly for you Live, Love, Laugh

i can have one stroll a day.

i made an apt with my family dr. for monday and want to talk to him

bout some things i can do to help while i'm on my restricted activity

he wasnt big on the swimming either, cuz i wantedto do walkin or my

bicycling in the water but he wasn't for that

i told him, i didnt like the idea and i was already REALLY sick of

the inside of my apt... but i'll do what i need to do to really

recover and fix my back

Hi,

I have a tape called Sit Tight. It is 30 minutes of exercise sitting down. I got it at AmeriMark.com. Something like that might help you be active without hurting yourself.

Patience, patience, patience!! You can get healthy after the six weeks goes by without putting yourself in harm's way during that time. Not to mention messing up your surgery and putting yourself in pain. Hugs, we know you are eager to get going again, but six weeks is nothing compared to a lifetime!! Look at the PBS channel - they have a program on there called "Sit and Be Fit" and it's great - no impact, etc. You can alter the movements to your level of need. Seriously - eat as healthy as you can, do a little movement as your doctor advised and things will get better.

P.s. I forgot also to say and we discussed this before on this group: Your doctor can "Fire" you as a patient for not doing what they say or going against it.

You don't want that to happen.

Hi,

It kind of focuses on the upper body and arms but there are leg movements to some of it. It isn't too hard but it moves pretty fast. I'm working my way up to doing the whole tape. It last about 30 minutes and I can only do 10 or so, I'm really out of shape.

No it only hurts trying to stand up or sit down.

Sometimes standing still hurts. The PT has

helped allot but I still have a long way to go.

I need to be walking and working on stairs. That

is the last thing the PT told me I could do.
