Guest guest
's Daily MessageTuesdayJuly 04, 2006 56 QUILLS Jefferson was tired, REAL tired. He had burned the midnight oil from June 11-28, 1776, working on a project that would change the country forever, the Declaration of Independence! Sometimes Mrs. Jefferson would find him at his desk asleep, and she would cover him with a blanket she crocheted. Right after he finished, got in touch with the 55 other men whose signatures were needed on the declaration. They all were to come to Philadelphia on July 4 where could show this to them and get their blessing. Some of the men that would be there were Hancock, , lin, and . On July 3, Jefferson, his wife, and a few friends spent the whole day making the quill pens, 56 of them for the signing day. On July 4, 1776, thought about what an amazing day this was going to be. He rushed to his closet, and there he found a new suit that Mrs. Jefferson had made by the finest tailor in Pennsylvania. The shirt was white, and the ruffles had touches of red satin and stars. The coat was navy blue embellished with gold embroidery. At noon, all the gentleman met and listened to the declaration that had written. When he spoke the last word, all the men stood up to give him an ovation. Each man loved his quill and kept it with pride. To celebrate this glorious day, invited all the men and their wives to the very first 4th of July celebration! All the women had been cooking since early morning, making a feast fit for a king. There was pheasant and venison, and a stew made with rabbit and fresh vegetables from the garden. For dessert was a cake stuffed with fresh figs and cherries. Now the tradition of the 4th of July has been passed on from generation to generation, but today, please make some time to think about the true meaning of this holiday. Thank you, Mr. Jefferson and all the other men, for giving us our independence! Love,
