Guest guest
Mike, I would strongly suggest you read Roy Benson's " The Runner's Coach " . He also authored a very nice booklet, published by Polar, entitled, " Precision Running " . You will find the answers to questions there. Guest guest
Hi Mike, you say that you are running at 94% effort for a 10k race.that is a high effort and would probably be more like the effort level of a 5k race. how are you calculating your mhr? if you are using the formula 220-your age you may be calculating your mhr on the low side. if this is the formula that you used i guess that you are about 45 years old, giving you a mhr of 175. the best general formula for athletes is 205-half your age, which (if you are 45)would give you a mhr of 182 this would mean that 94% effort during the race would be 171 beats /minute which would mean that during the second half of the race you would feel that you are pushing it to keep on the 171 beat mark. all the best with future runs. peter byrne glasgow scotland
Guest guest
How many minutes does it take for you to get to three miles? I know as far a pulmonary ventilation goes after 30 minutes @ maximal exercise loads there is a ventilatory drift that occurs in minute ventilation and frequency of breaths. I would assume that there is a correlation between the rising heartbeat and the ventilatory drift that occurs in pulmonary ventilation. If you are completing the 3 mile mark around 30 minutes, that is my assumption. I am sure someone that is more knowledgeable with exercise physiology would be able to confirm or dispute this. I would say that as long as you feel comfortable running at this pace there should be no need to slow down your pace. If you didn't have the HR monitor on, you probably wouldn't even notice the gradual climb in HR after the three mile mark. Guest guest
The idea of target heart rate and training effect are very generalized. Studies have shown that heart rate monitors often have minimal benefit in determining intensity and training effect. Refer also to Mel Siff's book " Facts And Fallacies of Fitness. " It points out the myths of using heart rate monitors to provide accurate info on the training effect. It is very unlikely that everyone in the same age category should have the same target heart rate. Guest guest
I use the Polar M32â„¢ and really like it. http://www.polarusa.com/consumer/productfinder/productfinder.asp It doesn't work with my equipment at home but it does work with all the equipment at the gym. This way it shows on the display and you don't have to glance at your watch. Also it calculates body fat % burned and average heart rate for you workout as well as total calories burned. And it will add up the calories for the week. > > Hi all! > > Does anyone have any suggestions as to a good heart rate monitor I > can purchase? Guest guest
I have had great success with Polar heart rate monitors. Make sure it has a chest strap transmitter with a wrist band readout. Guest guest
hi darcy! i am considering getting a HRM too.... i can get the polar F4 or the S-120 for $100... or the F6 or the RS-100 for $130. im unsure which one to choose at this time. if the F4 will do everything that i want then i think that i will get one because it comes in white or black and is smaller, designed to fit a woman's wrist better than a clunky men's watch. the only thing that im unsure about while considering any polar is that you have to send it away to get the battery changed, or else you void the warranty. :*carolyn. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Guest guest
My battery lasted about 3 years...and it only took about 2 and 1/2 weeks for them to return it with with the new battery. Heck, I think the warranty ran out long before that anyway. I just like the option to swim with it. I could have replaced it at any store. They (Polar) also check out your transmitter free of charge and only replace it if they need to (it only cost me about $11-15.00 when they could have charged my credit card up to $50.00). I don't remember the full price, but I was surprised at how inexpensive it was. I really have no complaints and I don't think you can go wrong with them, but shop around for a good price. Robin PS. Mine is a big clunky men's watch...and I love it! Heck, with my long nails I need to be able to get to all the buttons with ease. Um...also they didn't have a women's version back then in the athletic models...LOL. Guest guest
This link should take you to where you can compare all the Polar models: http://www.polarusa.com/consumer/productfinder/productfinder.asp You can also go into a store like Sports Authority or Academy and pick up a flier. I found the best deal back then on line. I 'm not sure how it is now. Remember, most of the less expensive models cannot be hooked up to your computer for readouts and daily/weekly calorie totals but may suffice for what you may need. Guest guest
Thanks for the tid-bit of info Do the Polars require a chest-strap? Are they uncomfortable? It seems like they would be. Thanks! Darcy Heart Rate Monitor I recently bought a heart rate monitor. It is a Mio Ultimate. It has a lot of features…it is usable with a chest strap or without with the touch sensors on the face of the watch. It tracks calories burned, average heart rate during workout, how long you were in your ZONE, and how long you were above and below your target zone and how long it takes to recover. It does not connect to the computer but I keep a paper log so that is fine with me. It was 139.99 and the chest strap was 39.99 and I got a free accumeasure body fat caliper tester with my order. I had looked at the polar watches but they were a little expensive. I also got 2nd day air shipping for 5.00. Here is where I got it… http://www.healthchecksystems.com They also have a Tanita Body Composition scale that I am saving for..HE HE. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Okay, so how does this work? Do you have to stop and put your fingers on it somewhere and wait for it to register your heartrate? Or is it continuous monitoring? Does it seem to have a hard time reading during high impact exercise?
