Guest guest
's Daily MessageSaturdayJune 24, 2006 WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS When I was growing up, my parents didn`t have a lot of money. My father didn`t work, and my mother was the breadwinner of the family. There were a lot of things we didn`t have, but one thing we always had was FOOD! Len and Shirley would take Lenny and me grocery shopping, and the first place my mom would head for was the produce section. Shirley was a vegetarian for 19 years. She knew the benefits of fruits and vegetables. For the most part, except for those "fried frenzy" dinners, we had healthy meals on the table. I just ate portions of everything back then that were too big! Early on in my career, I always budgeted money for my meals. I always enjoyed going grocery shopping, and to this day, I love grocery shopping. You see, I want to put the healthiest food in my body so I can keep on going strong. Every day, I get letters from people who live on a very tight budget. They are always asking me how to put healthy food on the table when everything good for you is expensive. I try to guide them as best as I can, but I don`t have all the answers. I suggest that people who are watching their pennies first go to their kitchen and see what they`re spending money on now. Is it cans and bottles of soda? Sodas are expensive, and let`s face it; you`re not just buying 2 cans of it. Do you spend money on snack food and bakery goods? Do you smoke? Now that`s very costly! I mean, should you spend money on broccoli or tobacco? After analyzing where your dollars are going, try to cut back on some of your indulgences and put your money where your mouth is. If you feed your body well, you will feel well! I know there are markets all over the country that are less expensive than the big chain supermarkets. Look around; there may be one near you, and I know there are food banks through churches and charitable organizations everywhere.
