Guest guest
's Daily Message Tuesday May 09, 2006 THROWN OUT OF SCHOOL With the little free time I had on the cruise, I stayed in my room and watched the news. The ship we were on had a satellite feed from Denver, Colorado, so I got ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and thank goodness, CNN. Last Wednesday, they all had coverage on President Clinton and his fight to take Coca-cola, 7-Up, and all other high sugar content soda out of the vending machines in all public schools. Certain age kids could only buy water, milk, and real fruit juice. When they get a bit older, they can buy bigger bottles of water, milk, and real fruit juices, and when they get to be a teen, the vending machines at the public schools will also carry Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, and diet every soda you can think of. There was President Clinton standing side by side with the heads of all the soda companies, feeling so good about their decision that will start in 2008. As you know, everyone is pointing fingers at the soda pop kings, saying that our children are so overweight because of all the sodas they are consuming. I have to share with you that I drank a whole lot of pop from infancy, it seems. The fridge in the kitchen was stocked with Cokes, 7-Up, root beer, Orange Crush, and strawberry cream. My corner grocery store had not one, not two, but four massive tin containers filled with ice and bottles of pop that looked like rainbow glaciers! At school, there was a room near the entrance to some of the classrooms called The Candy Shack, and it was run by the nuns. They sold lots of candy, and to help you wash all that sugar down was a little sugar served nice and cold. All you have to do is pop the top! Today`s supermarkets and superstores have aisles and aisles devoted to colas and their synthetic clones, and for the last several years, you can buy a line of colas that have 4 to 5 times more sugar and caffeine in them! My point is that you don`t have to have them at schools. Kids can get them anywhere! I think adding water, milk, and real juices to the vending machines is a great idea. I really do! We must teach our children at an early age that too much sugar in any form is not good for anybody, big or small. I hope one day President Clinton will help me in reintroducing physical fitness to all schools across America. Then and only then will you see our children healthier!
