A LITTLE PRAYER FOR YOU

I began attending Catholic mass at the age of 6. All of us remember

something from our early childhood, and I do recall walking into St. Louis

Cathedral for the first time. It was huge, and the ceiling went on forever.

There were stained glass windows everywhere, and they were so colorful, just

like the colors in my kaleidoscope I had at home. There were these life size

statues of people that looked very holy. They had glass eyes that seemed to

follow you when you walked by. The black and white diamond shaped marble

floor led you to this alter. I had no idea what it was, but it looked like

it belonged to a king or something! There were lit candles everywhere, and

mountains of flowers that poured out of large glass vases.

All the children from the adjoining St. Louis Cathedral School sat in the

front row. As I sat there, I looked around at all the hundreds of people

that were sitting in the pews and wondered why we were all there. Within

minutes, the organ music started, and about six men and boys dressed in

black and white – I thought to match the floor – walked down the main aisle

and up the three steps to the alter. I didn`t understand what was going on,

but I got the hang of it after a few more Sundays.

I have been to masses all around the world. I`ve knelt in pews in the

Vatican and Notre Dam in France. Well, when I was in Toronto last Sunday, I

inquired about masses in the neighborhood to the concierge of the hotel. He

was an Italian gentleman. I had spoken Italian with him many times over the

years. He told me of a little church in Little Italy where the mass was in

Italian, so at 9:30 in the morning, I was sitting in a sweet church filled

with Italians of all ages, and what a wonderful mass it was! Many came over

to me and told me it was very nice to have me in their church, and a few

ladies invited me to their homes for meatballs and spaghetti, antipasto, and

lasagna. Oh, boy, what a temptation that was! I stayed a few minutes to

finish my prayers, and yes, I did say a little prayer for you!

Love,
