Guest guest
's Daily Message Saturday April 08, 2006 PIZZA, PIZZA Do you remember when you tasted your very first piece of pizza? Well, I do, and it was love at first sight! What was not to love? I remember the pie coming to the table all hot and bubbly. It was so beautiful! There were only 3 Italian restaurants in the French Quarter that served pizza, and I was a frequent visitor to all of them. I tried every pizza on their menu! Do you love pizza like me? Well, here`s a little history for you. Raffaele Esposito of Naples created the very first pizza in 1889 in honor of a visit by King Umberto the first and Queen Margherita. Esposito created a patriotic pie made with basil (green), mozzarella cheese (white), and tomatoes (red), naming it Pizza a la Margherita in honor of the queen. America`s first pizza was served in New York in 1905 at Gennaro Lombardi`s, an Italian restaurant that is still there. They used the same recipe Lombardi brought back from Naples. Americans eat about 100 acres of pizza each day! There are more than 60,000 pizza restaurants in the United States, serving about 2.5 million pizzas a year. There are so many different kinds of pizza, pizza out there. When I came to California, I was surprised how many kinds of unusual pizzas were served on the West Coast. A Hawaiian Pizza adorned with ham and pineapple, Philly Cheese Steak Pizza with tender slices of steak and cheese, the White Pizza with no tomato sauce and lots and lots of cheese. You can order classic hand tossed; crunchy, thin crust; or ultimate deep dish. You can get pizza with cheese stuffed in the crust. It has gotten to be so sinful. There were times in my past that I would sit and eat a large pizza by myself, washed down by 3-4 bottles of Coke. I would say 1/3 of all the fat on my body was made up of pizza dough, cheese, and more cheese, and of course, lots of pepperoni, America`s favorite pizza topping. One slice of pizza, depending on the size of the slice, can put you back 3-4 starch windows, all your dairy windows, all your fat windows, a vegetable window, and several of your protein windows. So my advice to you is to have one slice, be careful with the toppings, don`t deep dish it, and serve it with a tossed green salad. Thank you, Raphaele Esposito! Guest guest
Ann -- One of the things I've discovered is that when I am craving pizza, the thing I'm really craving is the taste & feel of the hot tomato sauce. Can you have tomato soup? Maybe you can try spicing it up with some Italian seasonings and that might help that pizza craving. Guest guest
.. . . and to be honest, those frozen " low-cal, low--fat " pizzas from Weight Watchers, etc just don't cut it. When I want pizza -- I want the good high fat, high calorie, full-flavored pizza. Preferably Papa 's! That's why I avoid pizza at all costs, unless I've not eaten at all for that day and I'm aware I'm going to blow my program (we all have our bad days, right?)Dacia <DEReinke@...> wrote: Ann -- One of the things I've discovered is that when I am craving pizza, the thing I'm really craving is the taste & feel of the hot tomato sauce. <snip> Ann and <maryannanderic@...> wrote: Is this ode to pizza supposed to help us???
