I'm still trying to catch up on all the e-mail I missed when on vacation

last week, but I hope you *did* get that jump-start you were aiming for.

Oh, I know that feeling all too well!

January 3 - 285.5

January 18 - 280

February 1 - 281.5

March 1 - 281.5

March 14 - 283

April 1 - 280.5

April 13 - 283.5

April 20 - 282.5

April 24 (today) - 278

I keep bouncing those same 5 - 10 pounds back and forth for the last few

*years*!

I was good last week, making sure I got at least 8 cups of water in each day

after we were in for the day. It meant waking up about 4 times overnight to

pee, but I did it. All this without taking my water pill, too. I was

certainly NOT going to take that and sit on a train for an hour.

Last week I tried an experiment - I ate only half of what I usually eat,

staying hungry between meals no matter how painful it was or how loud my

tummy rumbled (I was on the NYC subways a lot, so luckily not too many

people heard it). I had no snacks, either between meals or in the evenings.

I kept my daily calories between 800 and 1200 (as per Rice Diet guidelines)

and got *loads* of exercise, walking almost 20 miles for the week and having

the blisters, bloody toes, and a black nail to prove it. As you see, I only

lost weight between Thursday and today, and I attribute *that* loss to the

water pill I took yesterday for the first time in over a week more than all

that exercise and low calories. So frustrating!

Every now and then but not very often we will have icecream around 7 in the evenings.But this is only when we find ice cream on a very good sale or around a birthday. Well, in my case, I keep injuring myself, putting a stop to exercise for a

while. Whenever there's no exercise, there's a few pounds back on, but as

soon as I start up gain, they come off. I'm also in the throes of

peri-menopause, and unless I want to do at least 60 minutes of aerobics each

and every day, this flab is gonna take a long time to go bye bye. Hopefully

once I'm officially *in* menopause (1 year with no period) the fat will melt

off a bit better.

Aside form a cup of decaf coffee or Caffix in the morning and herbal or

decaf green tea in the afternoon, water is all I drink, too. I stopped

drinking diet soda when they took Tab off the market then started putting

aspartame in all the diet drinks. That stuff makes me dizzy and foggy

headed. Some sodas have splenda, but I find they're way too sweet.

Oh, I just remembered my 4 ounces of OJ every morning, so I do drink

something cold other than water. I hate oranges but will drink a bit of its

juice.

I can't even remember the last time we had ice cream in our house, but I do

remember the last time any of us ate it - it was March 2000 when we were

still living in FL, my son wanted one last visit to the soft serve place the

night before we moved back. He hasn't wanted ice cream since.

Me, too, which is why it was an experiment. Now it's over and I can eat my

regular 1400 again. I know I'll probably regain those 4 pounds, because I'm

sure that one week on very low cal slowed my metabolism already (I have a

very efficient metabolism, unfortunately), but this week's plans include

increasing my exercise a bit to include not just cardio but yoga/stretching,

tai chi, and weights, as well as getting outside and walking again as soon

as my toe heals. The podiatrist is on vacation so I'm on my own with this

until my regular appointment in early May. :(

I get so jealous of some of the women on the Rice Diet forum, losing 20

pounds in one week, many losing 5 pounds in one *day*, then I see that prior

to starting on the program they ate something like 8000 or more calories a

day, drank a 6-pack of Pepsi daily, and never exercised, but now they're

only eating 800 calories, dropped all soda, and are exerising an hour or

more a day. Oh, and they're in their 20's or early 30's and never dieted

before in their lives, haivng always been thin until this recent bit of

weight gain after they had ___ (fill in the blank - baby, accident, illness,

medication, etc.) that caused them to gain 10 - 30 pounds the past year.

I've yet to see a post from anyone who 1) was fat since childhood 2) has

*been* fat at least 30 years 3) has tried every other diet out there and

never lost on any of them. If someone said they tried other diets, usually

they also lost on every one but regained their weight. Heck, even the author

of the first Rice Diet book, Judy Moskovitz, who lost over 200 pounds when

she stayed at the Rice House, regaiined all her weight back - twice!

That happened to me back in 2001, when I lost 45 then stalled. Since then I

regained back 25 of it. Hey, it's better than all of it, right? :)

I was on this morning, and with any luck I'll be able to restrain myself

from getting on it again until next Monday. I do tend to get too obsessive

compulsive over the numbers at times.

I've been saying this for a while on one of my other lists, the one for the

food plan. I *do* feel better when I stay away from dairy - my sinuses and

arthritis don't bother me as much, and I'm even making it through this

allergy season on the same half box of tissues I started with, even with

being outdoors most of last week. And the exercise is essential. I have to

climb up 3 flights of stairs all day long, and even someone in the best of

shape (My landlord) gets winded making the trip. With regular exercise, the

climb isn't too bad. And the weight training helps me carry the laundry bags

and groceries up those steps. And the stretching, tai chi, and yoga, plus

daily meditation sessions, keep my stress levels down to a fairly normal

level so my blood pressure stays low enough to keep me off BP meds. I still

take my water pill a few times a week, but it's no longer needed daily and I

don't need the stronger meds the doc had me on in the past.

Sure, I would *love* to lose weight, but if it doesn't happen, I'm not gonna

get too upset over it. A little? Sure. Frustrated? Plenty, but not

earth-shatteringly so.

Now I have no problem with Diet Dr. Pepper or even Diet Pepsi but the coke I just could not stomache. My mom always have the Diet Dr. Peppers when we eat at her house and I really can't tell a difference in them and regular Dr. Pepper. And Pepsi would be my next best drink in the soda line. I used to years ago get diet rite but havent had one of those in years. Don't even know if they still market them.But to just be honest I'd rather have a good glass of ice tea. Well, I wonder if it was a delayed reaction, because when I got on the scale

again this morning (Yeah, I know I said I was not getting back on until next

Monday) I was down another 2 pounds, and that was with my normal breakfast,

a small lunch, my usual Monday dinner of 3 slices of homemade pizza (all

low-fat toppings on ww crust with vegan cheese), and even with a few Social

Tea cookies while watching tv. I had to stop after 2 as they were *way*

sweeter than I remembered them being. I think next time I splurge it'll be

back to my tried and true Chewy Chip Ahoys. :)

A bit more tired from lack of calories, and I'm pretty positive that because

I'm not eating a little something every 2-3 hours my hypoglycemia is going

to act up any day now. I'm going to treat last week like 's BlastOff

week and be grateful for the few pounds drop I did get.

I know that the calories were way too low to continue on long-term, even

though the Rice Diet books both say people have stayed on the diet (in the

800 - 1000 cal/day range) for months, even years, until the weight is lost,

but that's also while under daily medical supervision. The first book claims

it *can* be done at home, but warns that a person *must* see their doctor at

the beginning then every few weeks afterwards to have lab work done. On the

days you feel dizzy (and this seems to happen often) they recommend a slice

of regular bread to help boost your sodium levels. Excuse me, Rice Diet

folks, but a food plan that requires constant medical supervision and

micro-managing what foods to eat based on current lab work doesn't seem too

healthy to me.

Gee, I wish I could survive on 1200 calories long term! That's the amount I

learned

decades ago that *I* need to drop down to if I want to lose weight, yet, as

you know, that's really not that much food at all and too low for optimal

health for a person my size. But for now, I'll stick the laminated copy of

the 2000 calories Foodmover card back up on my kitchen cabinet and follow

that again for a while. I probably own't lose any more, eating that much,

but at least I won't be doing my body any harm, starving it.

drinks all the time down in steamy Texas.

However I've been just about on pure water lately.

chocolate Silk soymilk, and every afternoon I poured a half a mug full,

nuked it until it was so hot it burnt my tongue, and slowly sipped, making

half-gallon container was empty, I was over my hot chocolate phase.

I used to buy the Swiss Miss, I forget if it was low-sugar or sugar-free,

and it was pretty good, but with my body's reaction to dairy lately I didn't

buy any this year. I wish they made packaged versions of hot chocolate with

powdered soy or rice milk as well as dairy. There are loads of little kids

with milk allergies out there who would appreciate it.

He was never really a sweets eater, even as a little kid. In all his 22

years he's had a birthday cake twice - his godmother made a Cookie Monster

cake for his first birthday, and his friends at school bought one in their

second year of college. Even when he's on a cookie kick, he'll eat 2 or 3

from a bag then declare he's had enough, that his dad can finish the bag.

He's the same way with candy - a few bites and he tosses the rest in the

garbage. Yeah, I keep asking if he's really *my* kid. LOL

Depends on the person and his/her diet history. For someone who's been off

and on diets their entire life, just a couple of days on restricted caloreis

can send the body into starvation mode, as it knows all too well what's

happening. Someone who has never dieted in their lives, or very

infrequently, can go for a few weeks, maybe even months, before their

metabolism slows down in reaction to restricted caloric intake. Hormones

play a big part, too. Men take a long time to slow down, thanks to all their

muscle mass and testosterone, but women store estrogen in their fat, so the

body is very reluctant to give it up, especially if the woman is approaching

menopause and needs all the estrogen she can get, so her body will go into a

slower metabolic rate sooner. Many other factors play a role, too.

Only for my allergies, thanks. Yesterday I was too buys to mope for long.

Today, they plan on digging up the street in the ever-going rehab of the

apartment house across the street from me (this has been going on 2 years

this week, and the end isn't even in sight!) so I'm stuck indoors, as

they're not only going to take up 12 parking spaces but will close the

street once the work starts. I found the exercise books I was looking for

yesterday (weight training and a different tai chi workout) so I'll get in a

1-mile Sansone video this morning, then do the workouts in these 2

books, and then I still have a load of housework to get caught up on. We

never did get Spring Cleaning done this year, as we had winter weather up

until last week, then it returned again over the weekend. I did want to

finally get windows washed, but not with the street being dug up and more

rain later today.

And I still have 4 pairs of pants I've been meaning to cut out and sew since

this time last year.

All we an do is hang in there and keep at it. Eventually our bodies will get

with the program and shed the excess weight. All we can do in the meantime

is keep it well fed and watered and take it out for a walk now and then. :)

Blech. When I had the penicillin reaction I was sent home from the hospital

with a steroid scrip and it made my head come off and float around the room.

Not a pleasant feeling.

If any of us tried a program for one week and then gave up because we only

lost 5.5 pounds you would shoot us! Come on woman, you can keep up the

bloody toe starvation diet for at least a month can't you. :)

Why not just stick with 1200 calories since you know you can lose on that?

Piece of cake. Argh! I have to give up that saying. Seriously though, how

long do you think you could stick with 1200 calories per day?

Me? *Maybe* a few weeks if I was in my super motivated mode. In normal

mode it would be 1/2 a day before hunger sent me rummaging in the fridge.

Of course I couldn't even stick with 2000 calories a day for the long term.

Sigh. At least hunger isn't a problem for now although everyone says it

catches up to you eventually after surgery.

I'm waiting around for the cable guy to install digital phone service. I'm

actually motivated to vacuum but I'm afraid to since I might not hear the

doorbell. :) No excuse not to pick up stuff though. I'm highly motivated

to get this house under control. It's so embarrassing being such a horrid

housekeeper. It's just like losing weight. I keep saying I'm going to

change my ways but I never do.

Now I'm lucky to drink a glass a week. I keep saying im gonna get some artifical sugar stuff so I can have it again. I have never used that though before. What is the best stuff.? I have seen several different kinds. Are you a tea drinker? There are some really good teas out there these days. I really like the English Toffee from Celestial Seasonings. Experiment with differetn flavors & tastes. Every now and then I'd have a glass of Lemonade koolaid but tea has always been the drink for me. But the funny thing is I have always drunk regular tea. I have never really experimented with the flavored teas. I tried a different flavor twice I think in all these years and didnt like them. I don't even remember what flavors they was.My hubby likes hot tea but I myself like ice tea. I may give some of the other flavors a try. It has been a long time since I did try those and my tastes has changed over the years, I might like some of them now.And coffee? No way. Have never liked the stuff. When there's coffee, I'd be the one asked"Do you want some coffee to go with your sugar and creme? I have discovered recently I can eat some of the flavored oatmeals. I've used some of the different flavored teas to make iced tea. I have an ice tea maker that I use a lot. I really like the mint teas to make iced tea with. Very refreshing during the hot summer months. The lemon-flavored ones are good too. My husband until we lived in Ghana for almost a year. He developed a taste for Earl Gray tea. I'll have to get out my iced tea maker. I haven't used it in a while. I

like Luzianne decaf iced tea. I really like hibiscus mint tea too. I use

the Celestial Seasonings Red Zinger along with spearmint and peppermint.

Yum! Thanks for the reminder. I haven't made that in a long time. I'll

have to pick up the Red Zinger and mint tea bags next time I'm at the store.

Very refreshing.

It's hot in Houston already. Blech. The neighborhood pool is already open

on the weekends. My 9 year old is dying to go so I'll take her this

weekend. The water will probably still be too cold for me though. Dh and

my 6 year old are going camping so it will be a nice, quiet weekend with no

sibling rivalry.

My husband has a week of traveling. He has been at a pastors conference in Las Vegas since Sunday. He says it is kind of an interesting place for a pastors conference! On Wednesday he will fly from Vegas to Houston, meet with another pastor and then drive to Austin. On Saturday he comes back to Wisconsin. In my case, I've been known to gain and lose 5 pounds day to day. In fact,

I'm the opposite of most people - I can weight myself at night before going

to bed and be one weight and wake up 5 pounds heavier after hitting the

bathroom!

I barely lasted these 2 weeks, and you want to know the final results? I was

the same weight yesterday morning as I was 2 days before I started on it. 14

days of going hungry for nothing.

Last night we had a pizza to celebrate Henry's finishing his undergrad work

(except for 2 exams) and for getting an " A " and getting 4th place in the

senior project (got himself a $25 voucher for the bookstore for that one).

This morning I woke up 2 pounds lighter than yesterday.

My body just defies science!

We thought about it, but so many people in this city who did get it have

nothing but complaints, both for the operation of the phones and the tech

support (Optimum On-line, if anyone cares). With my dad gone and my stepmom

busy with her own family, if we make 1 long distance call every 6 months

that's a lot, and it's usually for tech support, not a personal call.
