Hi there friends, Well, I worked out on the treadmill today. Before I was walking at 1.5 miles per hour. Then I heard some one in here (sorry I can't remember who it was) say that they walked at 2 miles per hour. So I thought I would try that today. I walked at 1.5 for five minutes and then for the next 20 minutes I walked at 2.0 and then for the last five minutes I walked at 1.5. Thought that way I could warm up a little and cool down a little. I didn't think I could walk at 2, but I was able to. One doesn't know what one can do unless one tries it first huh? I was so proud of myself for being able to walk at 2. Thanks to who ever it was that mentioned that they walk at 2. Gave me the incentive to walk a little faster. After I walked at 2 for awhile, that 1.5 for the last five minutes seemed really slow. Oh also when I was in the exercise room they have a really big mirror that covers a whole wall. Well, I was watching myself on the treadmill in that mirror and looked down at my pants and they look really loose. I couldn't believe it. I think they used to be tight on me. That was a good feeling to see them looking kind of loose. 340/296.3/275

Is it possible to put a TV in the exercise room? Could you take up a collection from those people who use the room and buy one? Ask the management to put one in? -- How about getting one of those personal DVD players? You could get a movie or a favorite series on DVD and use that as something to get into while walking on the treadmill. I really admire you for being able to stick to it without something to watch. I would be so bored and would quit. When we go to the YMCA, I really don't care to watch what is on the TVs most of the time. I have a small MP3 player that I use with some of my favorite music. I have found that I usually close my eyes (don't need to watch where I'm going on the treadmill or exercise cycle), hold onto the handles of the treadmill -- usually just for balance -- and just listen to my music as a walk or cycle. Dacia, I'd love to get a personal DVD player, but I can't afford one. No money in the budget for one. Re: Treadmill -- How about getting one of those personal DVD players? Sorry to hear that your treadmill died. Maybe it will start warming up outside and you can go outside to walk. I love walking outside so much better then walking on a treadmill any way. Today it is supposed to get up to 50. Do you think that is still too cold to walk outside? I am trying to decide. Plus walking outside on the track across the street from where I live I know how far I walked. 340/296.3/275 Re: Treadmill, Good going! It was me who walked at 2 miles per hour.It's great that you could speed it up! I started out at about 1.8 and worked up to 2.0 and right now thats as fast as I want to go. I wanted to stay at 2.0 but work toward going maybe 1 1/2 miles but then the treadmill died. We all go different speeds so just whatever works best for you as long as you are exercising its a postive thing.Its so nice to follow your progress. Don't give up, you are doing so well!

I walk on a treadmill twice a week. I do not use incline. I walk 1.3 on

speed, very slow. I walk about 20 min. It really stinks that I can not do

more. MY leg starts swelling after 10 min and by the 20 min mark it is almost

double in size. When I use my Gazelle, This does not happen until after 35

min. So I usually recommend the Gazelle.

ive been walking on a treadmill for years with bad CP.

anytime i change speed or incline my CP flares up and

then goes away. overaall, i think the treadmill was

helpful for me.

Hi, Kimi. My PT told me definitely NOT to use the incline on the treadmill--that

it puts too much stress on the joints and isn't a good idea. I use the recumbent

bike with the resistance waaaaaay low for some cardio. The elliptical gives me

my best cardio workout while being kind to the knees. Some gyms also have an

" erg " machine...like bike pedalling with your arms for a great upper-body

cardio, too.

I cannot walk on a treadmill for a SECOND without extreme pain. But,

if I put the incline up to the highest (15.0) I'm usually fine! Weird

huh? Someone in this group actually taught me that. It seems to reduce

the impact- less pounding with every step.

I've also tried the elliptical and bike for literally 10 seconds and I

had non stop pain for a week.

The best cardio machine for me has been the step machine. The little

steps- not the escalator-like one.

But from reading what everyone else replied to your post, it sounds

like every body is different. So I suggest you just use

trial-and-error. Oh and about the 24 hour thing your doc said- that's

bs. You should have no pain at all. Just stiffness in the legs for

an hour after.

I agree with Hedy that the 24-hour pain thing doesn't make sense. From what my

PT folks told me, it's fine if the leg muscles ache after, even the next day,

but there should be no acute knee pain during or after the exercise or else

we're actually doing more harm than good. For mine, they told me if I got mild

aching during the exercise, that was ok, but if I get anything more than that,

I should scale back the exercise if possible or stop it. Doesn't mean it won't

feel ok the next time I try it. Sometimes one thing will hurt one day and be

fine the next.
