Guest guest
>I was wondering what are your favorite " must have " healthy foods that you keep in your pantry? A variety of beans; whole wheat pastas; different types of canned tomatoes (diced, stewed, flavored); fat-free baked beans & chili; all kinds of canned fruit packed in juice; salt-free broth & bouillon; various spaghetti sauces; different varieties of brown rice, including long grain, short grain, basmati, jasmine, Bhutanese; other whole grains - millet, quinoa, etc.; aseptic boxes of low-salt broth used as a base for soups or for cooking rice in to add flavor; oatmeal - steel cut and old-fashioned; dried peas, lentils & barley; whole wheat flour and ww pastry flour, as well as other baking aids, like baking powder, baking soda, and vanilla; boxes of whole grain mac & cheese mixes (Hodgson's Mill or Amy's Organics); box of whole grain baking mix (like a whole wheat flour version of Bisquick); various flavors of fat-free salad dressings; boxes of low-fat Mori-Nu tofu; cans of veggies - creamed corn, Chinese veggies, like baby corn, sprouts, water chestnuts; Mexican foods, like fat-free refried beans, enchilada sauce, whole wheat and corn tortillas; various vinegars for use on salads - regular, apple cider, Balsamic, red wine; lower salt soy sauce and teriyaki sauce; natural peanut butter (kept refrigerated); tahini (also kept refrigerated once opened); baked corn chips (for snacking and as a side with chili); rice cakes - any flavor, both full side for sandwiches and mini for snacks; hummus - I usually make mine fresh with freshly cooked or canned garbanzos, but I also keep a box of hummus mix on hand; salsa - various degrees of heat; crackers - Wheat Thins, Ak Mak, and other whole grain ones; and of course, organic popcorn kernels for the air popper. I'm sure my pantry closet has a lot more than these, but this is all I can think of off the top of my head right now that I already have on hand at all times. I also have some unhealthy stuff in there, like a box or 2 of cake mix for special occasions, and the every present can of SPAM that Ed enjoys a few times a year, usually when we're having a power failure.
