Hi Everyone, I just got a new pair of tennies for under $10.00 and now I'm trying to put in as many miles as I can. It's amazing what foot support can do for your whole body. I have less thigh and ankle pain. So it looks like I'm going to have to buy new ones every month or so. I've noticed that I walk on the outside of my foot. I know that many of you are avid walkers and runners. Anyone know of a support system that stops this? I'm a little bummed that the local Albertson's is closing down. This means that I can't walk to the grocery store. There is a Safeway about 20 minutes away by bus. I COULD ride the bus till I'm a mile away and walk the rest of the way. There is another grocery store near us but all their stuff is high priced because it's smack dab in the middle of Downtown San . January 29, 2006 was the Vietnamese New Year. Many of the Vietnamese are vegetarians because they think that it is wrong to kill an animal. I thought this week would be a great day to introduce you to the different types of protein. There are several ways to obtain protean in your diet. Chicken, Eggs,

Pork, Venison, Fowl, Beef and Dairy Products Gluten (From flour) are 70% per 1/1000 of a gram Soya beans, Kidney beans, chick peas, Lentils etc are 10-35% per 1/1000 of a gram Almond, Walnuts, Cashews & Other Nuts are 14-30% per 1/1000 of a gram (Do watch your nut intake though, since nuts are very high in fat also) Pumpkin seeds, Sesame seeds and other seeds are 18-24% per 1/1000 of a gram Tofu items are 16% per 1/1000 of a gram Corn is 13% Rice is 8.6%

> I just got a new pair of tennies for under $10.00 and now I'm trying to

put in as many miles as I can. It's amazing what foot support can do for

your whole body.

But you're not going to get much of it from $10 sneakers! For everyday wear

I buy cheapo Payless sneakers, but when I know I'll be doing a lot of

walking, nothing beats my $100 Rockports or SAS walking shoes. Now *those*

have support over and above what my orthotics give!

>So it looks like I'm going to have to buy new ones every month or so.

Have you looked into getthing the over-the-counter orthotics? I know I

mentioned that Spenco is the best and runs around $20 for a pair that will

last for years, and I know Dr. Scholl's now sells a number of different

kinds, too.

> I've noticed that I walk on the outside of my foot. I know that many of

this?

A custom made orthotic is the best, but since you don't have insurance and

these run a few hundred bucks, the next best thing is to look in department

stores ( I found them in Rite Aid and Bed, Bath, Beyond, believe it or not)

for these speical heel cushions that are sloped so the outside of the foot

is forced upward. Ed wears all his sneakers and shoes out on the outside

like that, and before my orhtotics I did, too. I would wear these with the

Spenco orthotics, as that one was still flat and I needed the lift.

> I'm a little bummed that the local Albertson's is closing down.

The one near my parents in FL closed down a few weeks before he died in

April. That was the only store my stepmom could walk to. I recently read

that the entire chain was sold off, so I'm sure all of them will eiather

close or be converted eventually.

>I COULD ride the bus till I'm a mile away and walk the rest of the way.

But only on the way *there*. I wouldn't try walking home a mile with bags of

groceries.

>There is another grocery store near us but all their stuff is high priced

Most of the delis and bodegas in town are like that, which is why I avoid

them.

> January 29, 2006 was the Vietnamese New Year.

Yep, Year of the Dog in the Chinese calendar. A very good year to get

married, horoscopes say.

>Many of the Vietnamese are vegetarians because they think that it is wrong

to kill an animal.

All Buddhists worldwide believe that, not just Vietnamese. I think

Confucians do, too, as well as a few Taoist sects and Seventh Day

Adventists. Many of the world's religions believe it's wrong to take a life

for food when we've been provided with all the bounty of the gardens to eat.

>I thought this week would be a great day to introduce you to the different

types of protein.

Take a look in our Files section under the Vegetarian folder for loads of

tasty vegetarian recipes. And while roaming the Internet, look at

http://www.fatfreevegan.com and http://www.fatfree.com, too.

> Chicken, Eggs, Pork, Venison, Fowl, Beef

These are still meat products and not allowed. Well, the eggs are, if

they're not fertilized, as there's no life being taken.

> Corn is 13%

> Rice is 8.6%

All plant products contain protein, just not as much as meat and dairy.

Eating a variety of fruits, veggies & grains will give you all the protein

you need each day, as long as you get enough calories in. How much is

" enough " ? About 1400 - 2000 minimum. Very easy to do eating low-cal plant

products.
