An enlightened professor - but then it doesn't say what he's a professor of!

Beneficial effects of acupuncture

From Professor N. M. Sutherland

Sir, In his comments on medical experiments into the efficacy of

acupuncture, Dr Stuttaford states (December 21) that “it does not

lessen inflammation, it does not cure arthritis . . . ” However, without any

other treatment, acupuncture cured me of rheumatoid arthritis. At the outset

I was very ill and in great pain. This was certainly not a quick fix; the

cure took four years, but it was complete and lasting.

Acupuncture and other alternative therapies are not exact sciences. Their

successful administration requires not only knowledge and skill but also

extensive experience, which is not quickly acquired. Thus, in the hands of

an inappropriate practitioner, I might not have been cured, and some would

have drawn the conclusion that acupuncture was unscientific and ineffective.

Similarly, the oft-repeated cry that there is no scientific proof or

evidence of the value of alternative therapies is nothing but a statement of

the limitations of science.

We all know that the most precious and exalted spheres of human experience

are not susceptible to its quantifications. Who complains that the arts are

unscientific, and why have religions always existed in human societies? What

people truly believe depends upon their experience, and the truth of one’s

own experience is incontrovertible to oneself.

Yours truly,

N. M. SUTHERLAND,

7 St ’s Gardens,

Chichester PO19 3BA.

December 22.
