Guest guest
, we must have attended the same showing tonight! Ha ha. You saved my fingers from typing a similar message! WE LOVED IT! I am hoping that everyone will not only see it but recommend it to friends, parents, teachers and others. We were encouraged by the fact that we stood in line (in the rain even) for over 20 minutes on a Sunday night. The word must be out because the theater was packed with kids who were hooting, laughing and cheering. And the Mcs was EMPTY! Two of our favorite moments were the filming of a hyperbaric (stomach reduction) laporoscopic surgery set to the Blue Danube Waltz, and the " caught on film " toxic attitudes of the food services workers at a public school, gleefully showing how they don't mind serving slop to the kids (their attitudes reminded us of Abu Guiame prison guards). The Appleton footage brought happy tears to our eyes. This film could be as powerful as all of 's flims combined! Wouldn't it be hilarious to see Mc's go belly up?! Guest guest
You didn't ask me but I wouldn't take small children to this film. Not because it's got anything bad in it, but because I think " ranting and raving " and forcing them to see propaganda movies like this are the wrong way to raise children ----if you want them to be good----. Also, the humor in it will go right over their heads, it's ironic stuff like 20-somethings like, and they will only see their pal Mc and people gorging on burgers. They will WANT to go to Mcs after the movie! But more importantly, strong-arming makes them want to act out AGAINST you. The more strident you become, the more they need to rebel. Most kids will HATE the movie if you make them go. It's Child Psych 101. The best way to affect children is to LIVE A LIFE BY EXAMPLE and then let them decide. We have to provide BETTER options than does the junk food industry. See the Manitowac Ovens approach in the Appleton school for stellar behavior mod of youngsters. Seeing 20 year old " children " who have gone to this movie on their own volition and then watching them get the humor and message was satisfying. Guest guest
Will, I know, I know, you think I'm exhibiting that oppressive behavior again. Thanks to you, I'm really trying to get over that mentality and think I am making some headway! And actually, I don't rant and rave AT my kids (usually ). I just mean about the " food " industry etc. I do think they might enjoy some aspects of the movie as they seem to be budding activists. Right now they want the world to see The Meatrix (know what I'm talking about-that little cartoon about factory farms?). Of course I do live my life as the best example that I can and I started them out young (at birth) so they aren't rebelling at this point. It's just that it's always nice for them (and mostly for me) to find that there are other people in the world that feel the same way I do. It's only recently that I am connecting with kindred spirits in the 'burbs and they still seem too few and far between, so my kids don't have much exposure out in the world to the other (my) side of the story. Kathy Whose kids don't consider Mc their pal! > > You didn't ask me but I wouldn't take small children to this film. > > Not because it's got anything bad in it, but because I think " ranting and > raving " and forcing them to see propaganda movies like this are the wrong > way to raise children ----if you want them to be good----. > > Also, the humor in it will go right over their heads, it's ironic stuff like > 20-somethings like, and they will only see their pal Mc and > people gorging on burgers. Guest guest
Shari Uptown is very friendly, safe, slow-paced and easy to navigate for out-of-towners. Much better than downtown Mpls. (which I think has become very ugly and unfriendly, yuck). It's also pretty good people watching (except that 80% are uniform surburbanites coming in for some fun) you'll still see some peacock hair-do piercer kids. They aren't dangerous, the poor kids are actually scared of their own shadows. You can also bus into the Uptown area if you want to go GREEN. The Uptown theater is right on Hennepin one block north of Lake St at Lagoon Ave. This is where the movie is. The same folks own the Lagoon Theaters which are one block east on Lagoon. Park in Calhoun Square parking ramp and walk 2 blocks or park a few blocks away on a sidestreet (where there are no meters) and get some exercise. Best street parking can be found a few blocks south, west or west and north. Parking to the east is less easy. They also maintain a busy surface lot next to the Lagoon which is discounted for movie goers. Don't park at Lund's Finding good food is easy, there is a MC DONALD'S 50' from the theater.....just kidding about going, although there really is one there!! Depending on when you go, I would suggest a meal at either LUCIA'S on 31st just off Hennepin but it is NOT a place to go for a fast meal. I highly recommend CAFE BARBETTE which is on Lake St. a few blocks west of Hennepin and serves much in the way of sustainable organic food. Yum (we are going there tonight). Faster food but still sustainable can be found at Lake Bowl about 7 blocks east of Hennepin on Lake St. Lynn Gordon's FRENCH MEADOW bakery and restaurant isn't exactly walking distance but awesome; they are at Lyndale near 26th. Likewise, the new GRAND BAKERY is dynamite and is at 38th and Grand Ave. Uptown also has good THAI, VIETNAMESE, TIBETAN, ITALIAN (Figlio, Campiello, et al), BBQ, and SUPER TRENDY (Bilimini Bay, Chino Latino, Tonic, et al) and all are within a block or two of the theater. Best post-movie coffee and snacks is diagonal across street from the Uptown theater at ZENO. We don't have the likes of a BIRCHWOOD CAFE here but there isn't much bad food in Uptown. I'd suggest you make enough time to go to one of the organic sustainable places. Have fun! Will in Uptown
Guest guest
WOW! All the choices you have of where to eat out! We have nothing down here. BUT, you would all be envious of all the milk, eggs, meat and gardens on our place. Thanks for all the info Will. Guest guest
Hello Shari! They are the same theater. One block north of Lake St. on Hennepin. Today there is a show at 2:45 pm. The first show is $5.25. The later shows are $8.00. The phone number is 651-777-3456 #547 To park for FREE go to the parking lot for the library across Lagoon to the north. Go through that parking lot to the street behind which has no exit to Hennepin. Parking on that street is FREE and most people don't know about it. I went to SUPER SIZE ME last night. It is terrific. If it becomes a commercial success, it could have a great effect on the election. The House and the Senate just passed a bill making it illegal to sue food companies for damaging their customers. The fellow in the movie had very serious liver complications that nobody expected including the three MD's, probably caused by the MSG in the Mc's food. I just read what is on the following web page about MSG and Obesity this morning. It came to me in an email while I was at the movie last night. If you read it you will understand why eating tradition food is so important. Go to: www.rense.com/general52/msg.htm I am going to tell everyone about this movie and take my three grandchildren ages 3, 5, and 7 if their parents don't take them first. I have been doing research on health and nutrition for 30 years. I had no clue about the relationship of MSG and obesity, even though I have known for a long time that MSG like Aspartame is a neurotoxin that poisons the brain. I have friend who served in the Vietnam War as a Navy Seal. He used to get migraines that lasted 2 to 3 days whenever he got the slightest bit of MSG. Guest guest
Thank you so much Phil for that e-mail on MSG. I have believed that traditional foods are the way to go but this tells me that there is no other way to go. How disturbing! I too did not realize that MSG was responsible for obesity but I did know that somehow processed foods were responsible. I don't know if anybody made that connection before or not, but it makes sense. I have read the book " Excitotoxins " but must have forgotten that even corn oil has MSG in it. Another good reason to cross that one off the list. I have been paranoid about my food before but I am afraid this has topped it for me. It will be difficult to keep up with the food industry if they put different names on it. Too bad for the people who are allergic or sensitive to MSG like your friend. For those of us who are believers, we can always extend our hand over the food and pray. AND, how on earth does the food industry get by without any responsibility for the food they feed us??? Litigation is an American pass time, but when people are truly hurt, there needs to be some retribution by the industry especially when they know what they are doing and don't care! I am very dissappointed in President Bush. He has had the wool pulled over his eyes. Re: " Super Size Me " > Hello Shari! > > They are the same theater. He got that money from the people who own and control the oil companies, the drug companies, the agricultural chemical companies, and the giant processed food companies. He is trying to pull the wool over our eyes. If you go see SUPER SIZE ME and tell everyone you know about it people are going to start to realize the truth. This MSG and Obesity issue could be the issue that drives this election. www.rense.com/general52/msg.htm Most parents and grandparents take a dim view of poisoning the brains of their children and grandchildren while fattening them up and leading them towards diabetes. MSG causes the pancreas to triple its production of insulin leading to obesity and diabetes. The fat in your body is the largest endocrine gland in your body and makes estrogen and other signaling molecules that seriously affect the health of all of us. The program by Natural Ovens in the Appleton, WI Alternative School had no preservatives or additives like MSG in the food for these kids. Guest guest
I had a feeling somebody would respond to that comment. I went out to eat today and did not enjoy much of the food not knowing what's all in it. I also brought my mother to Dr. Tschetter DDS today and he showed me serious damage to her teeth due to brushing with toothpaste. Toothpaste apparently is way too abrasive to teeth. He said we should not use tooth paste, but zylitol to brush our teeth. I have heard of the benefits of zylitol inhibiting strep and chewing zylitol gum helping reduce plaque but never heard about using it for brushing. He said she should try to get some but if not able to for now, just use Listerine (although he does not favor this choice). Have any of you heard of this? Re: " Super Size Me " Hello Jane! Guest guest
Yep - I saw it at the movie theater and it grossed me out. Fiona Young-Brown Kentish Maid Candles <http://www.kentishmaidcandles.com> www.kentishmaidcandles.com Think you can, think you can't - either way, you're right. - Henry Ford -----Original Message----- Has anyone seen the documentary SUPER SIZE ME? I rented it from Blockbuster last night and while I know how bad fast food is for you, I was still honestly shocked! It was very well done and it was just amazing to see the changes that happened to him. Even the doctors didn't expect a change that bad and before he was done they highly advised him to stop his one month experiment because it was causing him so much harm. It's just scary. There is so much I could comment on from this movie. Not to mention how long it took him to lose the weight that he put on in one month. I thought it was also amazing that even the salads and the yogurts and things were just as bad for you. You'd think you were making a healthy choice and while there might be more fiber and what not in some of it it's still just as bad for you. Anyone else seen the movie? n
Guest guest
I saw this as well. I'm thinking I'll buy it. Except for the references to " penis " and it's function I would have my grade school age kids watch it (I'll definitely have them watch it when they are teens). I know what you mean when you say there is so much to talk about with this movie. One thing I found extremely interesting was the Naperville school that had the ultra amazing fitness program for the kids ---- and walk into that same school's cafeteria and see what they're serving the kids for lunch ---- appalling. Guest guest
Here's a link to one of my blog entries about Super Size Me and fast food in general. http://skwigg.tripod.com/blog/index.blog?entry_id=462223 Check out the link to Chaz Weaver's site. He's a bodybuilder who lost 8 pounds and kept his abs while eating nothing but Mc's for 30 days. I don't know, maybe he's a freak. Maybe I'm a freak. :-) I understand that the Super Size Me guy was trying to make a point about what overconsumption of fast food does to sedentary people. I agree that it's catastrophic to lie around eating massive portions of grease every day. The decline in his health was jaw-dropping, but his was a really extreme example. I'd love to know what his results would have been if he'd exercised regularly or controlled his portions even a little bit. I really enjoyed the movie though. It was eye-opening because most people *don't* exercise or control their portions. Guest guest
I have now read both this link you gave to Chaz Weaver and watched Super Size Me and I find them both interesting but in reality I truly think that if anyone's is more accurate it would be Super Size Me because while most of us work out, the majority of the people in america do not and even if they do, half of them are there in full make up and not breaking a sweat. Also in Super Size Me he was a fairly average guy with a pretty healthy diet(better than most people). Chaz Weaver was already in INCREDIBLY good shape. So, I think it makes a big difference. I think his body probably had an easier time adjusting and bouncing back. Both stories aside, i just think it's amazing that A LOT of people do eat Fast Food several times a week and have sedentary jobs and life styles and I don't even think they realize how in the long term it can have a lot of poor effects. I think people blindly thing it's bad for them but that it won't hurt them that bad. In Super Size Me they even pointed out that the " healthier " food choices like the salads (if you use the dressing) and the Yoguts with Granola is almost as bad as the other stuff. You'd be much better paying a bit more and sitting down at a restaurant where you could order something more sensible. Anyhow, just my thoughts. n > > > > > > Has anyone seen the documentary SUPER SIZE ME? Guest guest
Have you all seen this movie? We just watched it. It's quite the eye opener. The guy risked a lot to prove a point. We eat fast food about once every couple of months... we rarely eat out at all. But I do know people who eat it quite often.
