You do know that Taco's and Burritos can be healthy too. Just watch your portions when you make your plate and let them eat what they want. Make a burrito with lots of tomotoes, diced onions, low fat cheese (hide the word low fat) and lettuce. You can do the same for tacos. I just got a book that has a bunch of recipes for pasta in it. I cook normal - I just don't add butter to the

veggies while still in the pot, the same for the

potatoes (I was easily using a stick of butter

every night just at the stove!) I use a cooking

spray to fry chicken etc. Plain noodles vs al

fredo etc. Check the calories or the exchanges -

most food isn't bad it's the evil things we do to

it that does us in. 4 ounces of meat vs 8,

broccali vs broccali w/ cheese (you can rescue

yours before adding cheese) - you get the idea.

You shouldn't have to cook 2 different meals

SOOOOO easy... make the same foods... turn up the veggies and bring down the meat and cheeses... TONS of water and smaller portions of what you're making. Have a healthy snack while you're cooking dinner... have a small portion of dinner and relax. With water and exercise and smaller portions of what you're making... you should be great! Well my kids love the tacos to. Which I change it up with chicken sometimes instead of meat. Add lots of veggies to the table. Let, tom, and onions for toppings. I also keep a 3 part separated container with celery, carrots, and green beans for the kids to dip into fat free ranch. Most of the times I put that out regardless of the meal. OR try chicken fahitas. As I said in previous emails I strive for top healthy eating during the day so if I am having a big meal with the family if I watch my portions I should be OK...

I totally understand your above post totally. I have the pickest family in the world. A vegetable to my husband is deep fried potato wedges or starchy veggies like corn or green beans. lol....or brocolli smothered in cheese! Slowly he is getting better but only because I don't tell him what he's eating majority of the time. My husband (and me) have taught our children bad eating habits and now we have to unteach them. My 12 year old is the easiet to try new foods. The milk issue...Have you tried making fat free milk and 2% together and slowly reducing the 2% until there is none? One of my friends did that. She can still taste the difference but now it's tolerable. The ground beef issue...have you tried Bogo burgers? they are wonderful. Can hardly tell they aren't REAL ground beef...have a great day and please realize you are not alone!!

Hi Myssi!! Welcome to the group!!

Veggies are very important. and there are a variety of ways to include

them in the meal.

My aunts adds celery and thinly sliced carrots to spaghetti. How

about lasanga with a layer of spinach. I make tuna casserole, it's

delicious. 2 Layers egg noodles (buy wheat they won't notice), low fat

cream of mushroom or celery soup, cheese, frozen mixed veggies and

tuna. put it in the oven for about 20 minutes and wa la!! Dinner.

It's really important that you incorporate veggies into your meals (i

know you know that)for your children's sake. You don't want them to

develope bad eatting habits and grow to struggle with weight and

other health issues. Meat should be the smallest portion of the meal,

no bigger than a deck of cards. Society has accustomed themselves to

eatting way more meat than the body needs.

I say cook and serve the veggies. Try making a small salad and serving

it resturant style, before the main meal. And tell them (your

children)they must eat (at least some of it) it before they get

anything else!! You are the parent. eventually they will become

accustom to it or they won't eat at all. Hahahaha. I had to do this

with my daughter. now she loves salads and eat veggie willingly. i

too am a product of this method, because i will eat all the veggies on

my plate first before touching anything else. try it and give it some

time.

Thanks , I guess in their head if I am eating it now it cant be good. So now they sorta have me thinking the same way. But your right portions are gonna be the most important thing. Thanks!

Thanks , butter is my weakness. I LOVE butter. I have been doing really well with out it lately. But I am not cookin with it or using it on anything right now. I just need to remember to cook the safe foods just better and watch my portions, Thanks for reminding me that.

Thanks , We have just eaten so bad for so long it is gonna take me some time to keep all this in my head. I am so used to just throwing in a TV dinner or going to a drive thru its really hard to go cold turkey on everything. I just need to keep thinking portion size!! :)

Meat was always sucha big part of our meals so that has been really hard. My daughter is a lot better with eating other foods then my son is. He only eats like 10 things in the entire world. A lot of these "I can't" things are building up aren't they? Maybe you can try one thing per week? Try turkey burger's one week (which do taste like ground beef to me when all the burger mustard/ketchup is on there)... and maybe another week get a small container of NF milk and try that.... I honestly could NOT STOMACH any fat swirling in my milk now that I've been NF for 15 years. You honestly will reach a point where you will prefer the NF. Basically... STOP GETTING IN YOUR OWN WAY MYSSI!!!! LOL Stop with the "I can't do that" mode and be more adventurous and just take small steps at trying more :-) Everyone will benefit. YES! I totally agree!!! When making pasta sauce, you can throw in a bunch of fresh spinach leaves... they wither into the sauce from the heat and you honestly CAN NOT TASTE THEM! Great meaty texture and gets drowned out by the sauce... they won't even know they're eating it. Try the La Tortilla Factory tortillas. They have like 10 grams of fiber per totilla and are lower in carbs. They taste great. We take the Simple Meals Chicken Stir Fry from the freezer section.. cook it up and then eat it in this tortillas and it's great!Jase4567@... wrote: Well my kids love the tacos to. I know I am my own worst enemy! lol Maybe I can add that as a goal too, To try ONE new thing a week. Ya know the bad thing is my hubby will eat SOME of the foods i wont eat, so he has my daughter eating them which is great. but he also has it in is head some things are just out of the question with him lol. Its an entire life style change for all of us. Baby steps is all I keep saying. :)

Hi Sue, No I have not tried to mix them together but that is a good idea I might try that. I litteraly went to the store last night and went to grab a gallon of the fatfree mile and thought I was gonna gag. I have nevere even tasted it so how can I gag??? Its all in my head because that is what I am used to and grew up with. I have not tried boco burgers again same "phobia" I have. Its just the fear of change I guess. But I think I will try one new thing a week and see if I can kick some of these silly habits. Thanks for the nice email, I feel really silly about some of what I just said but its true some of it is just so silly to me but i just cant do it all at once. :)

lol, I know you thought I was kidding but see sauce is no no here too. No one here will eat it. My son will eat spagetti every night of the week but you put one drop of sauce on it and he wont touch it. My hubby will only eat pasta once in a while too. Do I cant even stick it in the sauce and hide it from any of us lol

We used to have tacos here now and then. I'd buy the " kit " from Old El Paso

that contained the shells and sauce, and would use either ground beef or

chicken. Ed loved them, even though they were sloppy. We stopped when I kept

cutting my gums on the hard shells. I was never a tortilla chip person

because of that, and in recent years even stopped eating potato chips

because they would cut my gums.

My dentist says my gums are in good shape, even though I've been known to

cut them on toast crusts. It's just the way I am, I guess.

Back in November when Ed had his last vacation I made up a bunch of various

veggie fajitas/burritos (What's the difference? They're both meals wrapped

in a tortilla) for quick lunches on the go. I even carried some in my purse

when we hit Manhattan one day and ate lunch on a park bench. Just make up a

batch, wrap individually in foil, plastic wrap, or freezer paper (use a

rubber band to keep closed) and freeze. I know you don't have a microwave,

so you would opt for the foil, and just pop in the oven to reheat. In the

nuker they're ready in less than a minute.

Don't knock a tv dinner when you're working on re-learning portion sizes! As

long as you have no issues with salt, many frozen dinners are just fine for

one person for a fast meal.

Ew! My kid is just as bad. He was over 20 years old before he ate spaghetti

with sauce with us. All these years he would turn his nose up at it,

wouldn't even tate it. Now, he looks for it every Saturday.

A lot of other foods he's the same way - no sauce or flavorings, no foods

touching on the plate and ideally each food on a different plate. For years

when he ate burgers he owuld have it plain - no lettuce, tomato, or even

ketchup.

Now, since he's part of a crowd at college, he's been eating all kinds of

different foods (It's a very international group of nerds) he's not only

eating all kinds of past with sauces but likes curries - the hotter the

better - and piles his burgers high with all kinds of veggies and

condiments.

He would starve in this house! Pasta is a fast, cheap meal, and can be made

so many different ways. We have at least 2 pasta meals a week - one with

spaghetti and a jarred spaghetti sauce, accompanied with some kind of meat,

like sausage, meatballs, or chicken, and one other, usually with all kinds

of veggies and a veggie based or white sauce, sometimes mac & cheese (or

vegan cheese-flavored sauce).
