Guest guest
, It would depend on the extent of Plagio and some other factors, but at the same time there seems to be some lack of understanding by some Drs, too. At nine months your daughter is a bit older than some, but definitely still young enough to benefit from treatment. How the helmet could have no impact is not understandable to me. That seems to be a poorly conceived statement by your Docs. There are several parents here who can tell you their doctors denied any need for treatment but in the long run needed it. At the same time I've talked to folks not in this group who had wonderful success with repositioning. Did your doctors reccomend this line of treatment? Our son's plagio would have gone untreated if we hadn't forced the issue. We made a (free) appt with a CT clinic and got pointed in the right direction. If there is one close you may want to try this. Gotta cut the answer short...crying baby! good luck and keep us posted! > My 9 month old daughter has been diagnosed with positional > plagiocephaly and we have been told by a specialist to get a helmet. > However, we have talked to several other doctors who do not recommend > the helmet and said it will not have an impact. Guest guest
One of our pediatricians told us that too, and I can't wait to see her next to show her 's before and after photos after just one week. You can see for yourself at http://www.exracers.com/nathan.htm and click on Plagio. has had his DOCband for three weeks now and I'm so glad we did it. I think his pictures are undisputable proof that the DOCband can help. Guest guest
My daughter received a helmet to correct her positional plagiocephaly when she was 9 months old. She had moderate to severe plagio and our specialist was a firm believer in the benefits of helmet therapy so there was really no question in our mind that we would do it. We feared the possible consequences of untreated plagio since she had facial assymetry and ear misalignment. wore her helmet until she was about 15 1/2 months and we got good correction. She never once cared about having a helmet on her head and believe me when I say she is a high maintenance child! It was harder on my husband and I then it was on her! will be 2 years old in a couple of weeks and we do not regret our decision. If I had to do it over again the only thing I would change was to push the pediatrician harder when we first mentioned her flat head at her 4 month old well-baby check! Good luck with your decision. You will get TONS of stories and words of comfort from the other moms and dads here. We have a great group of supportive and knowledgable people here. Welcome and please keep us posted on your decision. You have our support no matter what you decide to do. Marci (Mom to ) Oklahoma
Guest guest
Hi - what a difficult and scary time for you- making the decision to band or not to band is such a personal one and a lot of parents can attest that they just wanted the DR's to say yes you have to do this- but more often than not we have all experienced the same as you- one DR says no another says yes one says it works the other says it will round out on its own. My son was 3 months when we banded him in the DOC-quite early but he had mod/severe plagio and I wasn't willing to go the wait and see route and at the time neither was my ped. In the midst of this we moved to another state and our new ped had never seen a helmet and was minimally educated on it-he recc. I see a neuro here about it and when I talked to him he was even less educated about helmet therapy! But was more than happy to consider surgical intervention at the age of 2 if we didn't see it round out on its own! (NO THANK YOU!) I am so fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time to have been given the options. was a C section baby born with plagio and we started repositioning at 1 month-as he became more independent it was more and more difficult to keep him off his right side and by 3 months the flattening was worse instead of better so we proceeded with helmet therapy. It was a very scary time because I wanted desperately to make the right decision and didn't want to have to do anything unnecessary and I am so thankful now for the decision that I made. He wore the helmet 3 months and we flew form TN to Georgia every week for treatment-he has a beautiful head now and after the initial casting he didn't care one bit about the helmet and that it was on his head-it was actually harder for hubby and I but surprisingly enough once he graduated we actually missed it-he looked so different without it. We think we made the right decision for us-there are long term effects when left untreated and the older your daughter gets the slower the growth rate of her head and the more difficult correction is. We have parents on this board who chose not to go the helmet therapy route and I hope they speak up soon and give you there advice and what worked for them-more mom's here have banded so you are likely to get themost responses from them. Just way all the options and rely on your Daddy and Mommy instincts they will lead you in the right direction and to do what is best for your little girl. I wish you much luck and peace with this process if you haven't found the articles or the Doc web site let me know I will send you some links so you can read up on the info that is out there. I am glad you found us-we have lots of experience here with over 1000 wonderful members to help you every step of the way please feel free to email as often as you like and no question is ever stupid. You sound like a great Dad so keep up the wonderful work and let us know how your little girl does! Beck Mom to doc grad Memphis
