Guest guest
oh yeah!!! you should see hte mom's on teh playgroups (too early to fix typos), most of them have 6 month olds and older, some younger, but the ones that have kids that fall into the 6-23 month range are just freaking out. It's unreal. I kepe thinking back to last winter when we almost lost my grandniece. They keep blaming it on the flu .... Jen had her to the doctor 3 times in 5 days and called everyday ...... she knew something wasn't right, but the nurses/docs kept blowing her off. If they'd waited one more day, Rory probably would have died. She had pneumonia 2ndary to the flu. Well, duh .... then the flu didn't almost kill her, pneumonia and negligence on the doctor's part did. arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh in IL Seniors fearful without flu shots > > Is this typical of what's happening in the US right now? Guest guest
Yes, fear is running like crazy (and of course since this is a fear-based industry, it's exactly " what the doctor ordered. " ) Did you read the information from Dr. Tenpenny about the marketing plan for this years flu season? It's all based on fear! Here's the link: http://www.vaclib.org/news/flusales.htm And as far as vaccinating babies, I think that all comes down to $$$. They ran out of other guinea pigs! (the sad thing is so many people are falling for it!) Kay ********************* Is this typical of what's happening in the US right now? Is everyone scared out of their minds by the prospect of flu? And why are they considering vaxing babes under 6 months? I don't see this reaction in the UK - people don't seem overly concerned about the possibility of vax shortage...is your government doing too good a job of brainwashing? The region's health officials are urging hospitals and health-care providers to ration available flu vaccines and administer doses only to those who most them most: the elderly, infants and people with chronic illnesses. " People are being encouraged to forgo getting the vaccine this year unless they are in a high-risk group, " said Dr. Dennis McBride, director of the Milford Health Department. " We are also advising health-care providers to prioritize and give the vaccine to people in at-risk groups. Most seem to be complying with the request. " Meanwhile, elderly residents in the region are not only worrying about possible rationing but also about surviving if they are felled by the illness. The health warnings and citizen fears come on the heels of Tuesday's announcement that much of the state's flu vaccine will not arrive this year. Chiron Corp., one of two companies that produce most of the vaccine, had its license revoked this week by British officials. The company reported earlier that several batches of vaccine at its Liverpool plant were contaminated. Chiron was expected to deliver 45 million doses to the United States, approximately half of the country's supply. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines high-risk groups as health-care workers having direct contact with patients, parents with babies under 6 months old, those with chronic diseases and immune deficiencies and those over the age of 65. Other high-risk groups include women who expect to be pregnant during the upcoming flu season, which stretches from late fall through early spring. The shortage has become a cause of concern for many elderly residents in the region. For seniors, catching the flu can be a serious, if not fatal, business. However, many senior centers have canceled their vaccination clinics because of the shortage. " We've been getting a lot of phone calls this week, " said Terry Porcu, an employee at the Derby Senior Center. " Our Health Department advised us to cancel the clinic because there isn't any vaccine. The seniors are very concerned about the situation. " Other senior centers in the region that have canceled clinics include Shelton, Seymour and Milford. Officials at the Baldwin Center in Stratford are among a handful in the region who remain hopeful. " We are still hoping that we can get some vaccine, " said Diane Puterski, director of senior services. " We've finally emphasized the importance to seniors about getting vaccinated and now there isn't any available. " Milford resident Joy , 86, said she is very concerned about the shortage. " It's really helped me in the past, " she said. " When you get up there in age, you really start to worry about these things. I'm hoping the vaccine will be available somewhere else. " A spokesman for Bridgeport Hospital said the facility expects to receive approximately 2,000 doses of the flu vaccine, which will be distributed on a priority basis. The hospital had expected to receive 3,500 doses and has put on hold community-based vaccination clinics until more vaccine becomes available. " Our first priority is giving the vaccine to high-risk groups, " said hospital spokesman Cappiello. " We expect to meet the demand of our employees and our hospitalized patients. But it is uncertain at this point if we will have any vaccine available for the community. " He said the hospital typically operates clinics at the Easton and Monroe senior centers as well as senior housing facilities in Trumbull. " The biggest impact of the shortage will be felt at community-based clinics, " Cappiello said. Fairfield's Health Department had planned flu vaccine clinics Nov. 9 and 10 at the Fairfield Senior Center, but those clinics are on hold, town Health Director Arthur Leffert said. Leffert said his office has sent e-mails to about 25 Fairfield doctors asking them if they have flu vaccine and, if so, if they would be willing to sell vaccine to the Health Department or allow the department to refer people to their practices. The Fairfield flu clinics scheduled in November were the only ones the department had planned for adults at high risk of complications related to flu and pneumococcal disease, Leffert said. However, Leffert said Shaw's supermarket on Black Rock Turnpike and Walgreens on Villa Avenue, both in Fairfield, still expect to hold flu vaccine clinics this month. The clinic at Walgreens is set for 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday; the Shaw's clinic is from 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 21. The American Lung Association has set up a flu hot line where people can get information on where vaccines are available in their community. The phone number is 1-888-668-6358. Residents can also call their local health departments for more information on where vaccines will be available. For those who don't get the vaccine, health officials stress proper hygiene, such as routine hand washing and covering your mouth when you cough, to avoid spreading the flu.
