Guest guest
Dr Mercola has articles about the need for complete darkness and he doesn't strike me as a quack. So, one can get those curtains that block the light.. Laurie>Oh also studies have shown that even outside lights (like security lamps) can disrupt a woman's reproductive cycle. Can't hurt doing more research, hmmm?
Guest guest
I do know that when I lived in my first apartment and did not have much money I had to put towels over the curtains to darken the room. The lady who ran the complex did not like it but I was not about to buy curtains for a temporary situation when money was tight. I found it impossible to sleep well with the light that close to the window. It was a well lit room in the middle of the night without the towels. I never knew about it disrupting ones reproductive system. Maybe that explains why I like a dark room so much when sleeping. also studies have shown that even outside lights (like security lamps) can disrupt a woman's reproductive cycle. Guest guest
With the greatest of respect, I don't believe it is a pile of doodoo (dh has informed me what that means in the US!! LOL!!) There is plenty of statistical evidence to suggest that people who work prolonged stints of night-shifts - and are therefore not getting as much natural light because they sleep in the daytime, and work in a lot of artificial light - have an increased risk of different types of cancer. Limited as my understanding of the human immune system and its interaction with the endocrine system is, it seems to me to be perfectly reasonable that such endocrine disruption would increase the risk of cancer. Artificial light plays havoc with the pineal gland, which is responsible for melatonin secretions - in turn responsible for maintaining the body clock, preventing SAD, and controlling sleep cycles. If you look at a satellite map of the world, taken from space, (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0011/earthlights_dmsp_big.jpg good example) the amount of light pollution in the *developed* world is horrific. Not surprising that people's melatonin secretions are up the creek. I'm lucky enough to live in a tiny village where there are no street lights and when it gets dark, it gets *very* dark. And I have definitely slept better since moving to this environment. Love, light and peace, Sue " Learn from the mistakes of others--you can never live long enough to make them all yourself.
