Let's see: here's how it went when I had my son (had him on a Tuesday, was due the next day anyway):

Sunday -- felt like I had the flu -- thought, no biggie, after all it *was* November.

Monday -- Still felt lousy ... put daughter for a nap, but left her bedroom door open so I could hear if she woke up. Decided to have a bath while she napped (all hail the epsom salts!) Woke up to her screaming "mommy" and smacking me on the head -- yup, that's right ... passed out in the bath. Hubby was at work while all of this happened. Managed to get outta the tub and went down to the couch. By this time, I didn't even realize that my daughter was still in the house (she wasn't even two yet). Half hour later, our exchange student got home from school and took care of Ilene while I slept. When hubby got home, he left me to sleep while he got food for everyone. Then her took me to ER (he thought I looked worse than I'd ever looked).

At ER -- has to get an orderly to help me outta the van. Triage nurse assesses me (after waiting 45 minutes in the WR for my turn) and wheels me down the hall, telling my husband to register me. Seems upset that there is no room available that has a crash cart (I'm just starting to become aware of what is happening) Doc comes in (after we found a room) and asks if I've always had heart problems, or if this is a new thing ... my response: :What do you mean heart problems?"

Turns out, my heart decided to throw in a third beat (fun, not). So after being assessed by the cardiac guy on call for the ER, and the on call OB/GYN, they decided to send me to London (an hour away) as that is where the specialists are (along with the OB specialists). Sent for an ambulance to transfer me ... ambulance arrived, but got called away before I could even get on the gurney, as there was a MAJOR accidient in town (a few cars collided with a brick wall). So had to wait until they returned (an hour later). Hubby called his parents, and asked if they could watch daughter. (Said yes, of course). He jumped on the highway to meet up with them, and then was going to meet me at the hospital.

Anywho, got portable heart monitor on me, am in the ambulance ... we have to pick up OB nurse on route, in case baby becomes distressed. Get to London, get hooked up to million or so machines. Get told that if I will be induced at 6 am to see if having this child will stop problems. Go into labour at 3:30 am. (Swore I wouldn't ever be induced again ... would rather have a c-section. Acutally, asked for one while I was there -- have arthritis, and labouring for many hours semi-paralyzes me for a few days after).

Have baby at 4 pm. Still having heart problems. Cardiac specialist supposed to come see me next day. I was down the hall at a breastfeeding clinic. Hubby came to get me, and by the time we got back to my room (less than 5 minutes), specialist was gone, and decided to not return. OB nurses called him, and he said -- without examining me -- that I'm young and it was probably just a flukey thing. No follow up consult or anything. Damn I hate doctors at times!

Well, there's my book of events. Still pushing for a referral, but thinking there will have to be a crisis before I get one. Not the greatest, but welcome to Ontario health care!

Well, must go get son up -- it's 11:00 and he's still asleep -- gotta love them growth spurts!

Take care, and I'll post later on.

now I know where my brain short circuited - London! but I see you're in Ontario, I think I got it now. I really hate that dr dismiss stuff because of your age/weight. I was about 34 when the hospital said I COPD, but my doc says no I am too young - I have a sister who's a year younger she was diagnosed with it a yr before me - my mom had it, my dad had it. I smoke so it all makes sense, but that's ok because I can't afford the meds anyway and am doing fine (except for now with this %#$@ cold) and so much better since losing 60 pounds :)

I would of freaked out with all that waiting - more stress! that hospital stay I referred to was due to them giving me WAY to many breathing treatment because they weren't helping but boy my heart was racing - had to spend the night in the cardiac care ward before going to a regular room. I was totally freaking out - thought my heart was going to explode - also single parent so I was worried about my kid. I can't believed you passed out in the tub! how scary is that. so you just have to wait for a referral - which could take years? will you have more trouble if you get pregnant again? (sorry if I'm prying) are there any warning signs?

find a job with insurance

I have insurance threw my hubby and it sucks. LOL If you go to a clinic ask for samples. And no offense should you be smoking. Sorry had to ask. My mom is alive today because she quit. I am convinced she would not be alive if she did not quit. Just wish my MIL would. If you ever quit do what I wish I had done. Put that money that you spend on butts OR even a portion of it in a jar OR stash to do something special for yourself. I never did . Wish I did though.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

My father was diagnosed with COPD when we were kids because of his

emphysema; *his* father had the diagnosis because of his asthma.

the money would be great - that alone should be a great incentive <GBG> I could spend it on new clothes LOL

I just wish I saved 1/2 of what of spent on butts. Back when I smoked (1991) a carton was $13. My splurge would of been to have my teeth bleached.

cardio pulmonary obstructive disease (really a rather new blanket term for respiratory issues) - I used to tease my mom it stood for cranky old persons disease (it was the only way I could remember it - that came back to bite me in the butt LOL. I use an inhaler when I have the money - at the time I had insurance it was $330 a month for 4 of them - but as long as I don't have a cold I can control it pretty well. and the weight loss has helped a lot as well. There is a 2 year wait to get on the access to care list (even though I was on it before). It isn't worth the aggravation - just hoping to find a job with insurance.

my doc left the medical group and he used to give me samples - not sure what the procedure is now since I haven't been to see him since last years flu shot. I know - the smoking thing is next on my list - it really is I just haven't hit it yet - I've gone 2 weeks before but I will get there - I come from a family of quitters (not all but most of them have and they did it cold turkey). the money would be great - that alone should be a great incentive <GBG> I could spend it on new clothes LOL

I think most of us wish our MILs would take up smoking. :) {evil grin} I

get along great with my MIL now that she is in VA and I'm in TX. :) At

least she raised one fairly nice son.

Yes, they're pretty expensive. I feel sorry for Henry in another 2 years.

When he hits 22 he's no longer covered on our insurance, but he'll still be

a full time student and won't be able to afford any medical insurance. Even

if he (or we) *could*, all of them say pre-existing conditions aren't

covered for the first year, sometimes not at all.

>- but as long as I don't have a cold I can control it pretty well.

Not mine. My lungs feel it if I miss just one dose of my inhaled steroids.

In good weather conditions, the other 2 I can skimp on, but not those. And

if I do get a cold or something, I immediately go on oral prednisone pills

as well as doubling up on the inhaled steroids, and usually get a few *more*

inhalers added to the regime. (sigh)

At least we're lucky to be living in an age where these meds are available.

I don't know *how* my poor grandfather did it (my dad's real father, not his

adopted one).

another reason I'm thrilled daughter outgrew her asthma and that the thyroid meds are cheap (at least at this time)

ooh hate that presnisone :( though, IMHO, I don't get wacko just puffy lol. I can get by on just the advair most of the time but thats $120 so I don't refill it often but can sometimes get sample from DR.
