Guest guest
I was wondering if there is any sort of group or posting that exists so that your children can get exposed to other children that have chickenpox etc., so they don't get it as an adult. I'm concerned that with more and more kids getting vaccinated it will be harder to get the virus naturally for immunity. I know the risks are greater if you contract it as an adult. Does anyone know of such a group or anything? I did join another list that said it did that but it's been months and I still haven't been approved, I think the list is defunct. -Sue

Guest guest
We have talked about this as well, since our boys have had some, but not all of these illnesses. There was recently an article in Mothering Magazine about this very thing, but I regret, I have not had time to read it yet. One solution we have come up with is to try to find like-minded parents in our area to share our concerns with. I have met them in all kinds of places, but more highly concentrated at LaLeche League Meetings, Mothering magazine or other online communities that allow you to find folks in your area, local homeschooling groups and through our physician's practice. This way you can be on the lookout for chicken pox, measles, etc. and hopefully have a " party " when the time comes. Jami Fawley pink-think@... Guest guest
Our doctor, who happens to be anti vax, asks parents if they want to be informed if a child contracts a disease that they want their kids to get, with the sick child's parents' permission of course, so that they can set up parties. Guest guest
Don't forget that kids can get chickenpox from anyone with shingles! That is how it was started in my group, a nursing mother had a mild case of shingles, the rash was on her belly and her baby rubbed it everytime she nursed. The mother had no idea that it was shingles and that baby came down with chicken pox. My big worry is measles, not now, I am worried that they won't get it until they are adults because I have never seen a child with measles. Guest guest
Here in the UK a database is maintained of unvaxed children and you can elect to have your child's details entered and be contacted when a child on the list contracts a *vax-preventable illness* such as measles or mumps. Robyn's been on this database since its inception about four years ago and to date I've only been notified of a couple of cases of mumps and one of measles, none of which were within practical travelling distance for me. But the concept is sound, and I think it should be more widely advertised, at least in the UK. It was first advertised in Natural Parent magazine (edited by Lynne McTaggart), which was how I found out about it. It's a national database and co-ordinated by volunteers in each region. I was going to co-ordinate the SW region, but was unable to do it due to time constraints. Now I wish I'd rearranged those constraints and gone ahead with it. If anyone here is in the UK and would like more details about registering their children on this database, contact me off-list. I can pass your details along to the national co-ordinator.
