I wish it meant they were going out of business, but they are using this to

their advantage...........

Rationing for Vaccine for Meningitis

Spot shortages of a vaccine to prevent meningitis in babies have led the

American Academy of Pediatrics to notify its members that the vaccine is

being rationed and that if a widespread shortage occurs the vaccination

schedule will be changed.

The vaccine is Prevnar, made by Wyeth. It is not the same as the meningitis

vaccine recommended for young adults living in college dormitories or

barracks.

In an e-mail message to members on Monday night, the pediatricians' group

also said Wyeth had created an appeals process for doctors who did not have

enough vaccine to give all four recommended doses to their patients. Shots

are usually given at 2, 4, 6 and 12 to 15 months.

If schedule has to be changed, the fourth dose will probably be delayed for

healthy children but given on time to those with chronic diseases.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will publish a notice about

Prevnar shortages tomorrow in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report,

said Dr. Glen Nowak, director of communications for the National

Immunization Program.

Petkus, a spokesman for Wyeth, said the company had resumed

shipments but was limiting doctors to the same levels of vaccine they had

ordered during the previous six months. The company is trying to prevent

hoarding. Mr. Petkus said Wyeth's goal was to make the vaccine available to

the largest number of people.

This year, influenza vaccine is also in short supply, and there have been

widespread shortages of many childhood vaccines in recent years. A report

to be published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association by

a government advisory group on vaccines says shortages are likely to recur.

One reason is that vaccines are difficult, time-consuming and expensive to

make but yield less profit than other drugs, and so fewer companies are

making them than in the past.

Among those who had difficulties obtaining Prevnar was Dr. Elihu Sussman, a

Manhattan pediatrician, who ordered 40 doses but, after waiting a month,

received just 5. Dr. Sussman protested, and Wyeth agreed to ship him 35

additional doses, he said.

" I said, `If you're going to be rationing this stuff, you can't be doing it

the way you've been doing it, you haven't communicated anything,' " Dr.

Sussman said.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wyeth on Thursday said it has temporarily delayed

shipping its blockbuster Prevnar vaccine against childhood pneumococcal

infections because of the need to upgrade company quality-control

processes.

Wyeth spokesman Doug Petkus declined to give further details, but said

the company decided on its own to upgrade its quality-control systems

for Prevnar and had not been asked to do so by the U.S. Food and Drug

Administration.
