Guest guest
" Sale of Unlicensed Flu Vaccine Probed " Washington Post (www.washingtonpost.com) (12/24/03) P. A5 The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating reports of sales of unlicensed influenza vaccine. The agency has authorized only three vaccines--manufactured by MedImmune, Aventis Pasteur, and a Chiron Corp. unit--and it is working with Florida health officials to keep unlicensed vaccine out of the country. This year's flu epidemic began earlier than usual, and the disease is now widespread in 36 states, but some areas have a shortage of the vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working with the FDA to get more vaccine, and the agencies are working with state officials to investigate vaccine being made available through unusual sources. " Poll: Some Are Taking Flu Vaccines Lightly " USA Today (www.usatoday.com) (12/24/03) P. 4D A recent Associated Press poll of 1,001 adults found that just 35 percent of the respondents received the flu vaccine. Only 6 percent of the people who did not get the vaccine said they had tried to get vaccinated but the flu vaccine was in short supply. However, 45 percent of the unvaccinated respondents said they did not think the vaccine was necessary. The survey, conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs between Dec. 15 and Dec. 17, determined that more women than men have received the flu vaccine, while older people received the vaccine at a significantly higher rate than younger people.
