Lay a piece of cabbage over the spot that hurts on your breast. That will

take away the infection. Just don't do it for too long or else it will dry

up your milk. Just make sure you monitor it.

I know this is OT and I apologize, but I know there are a lot of

breast feeding moms on this list that might be able to give me some

advice. I am currently breast feeding my 13 week old daughter.

During the night I kept waking up with pain in my right breast and it

seems to be getting worse. I have tried a hot shower/hot packs but

nothing seems to be helping yet. I feel pretty achey in my upper

back, neck and under my right arm. I don't seem to be running a fever

though. Any thoughts as to what I can do?? Please feel free to

email me privately with any suggestions and THANKS!!

Never fear! This is a common age for mastitis to occur, and most often this

needs attention, but NOT medication. I've had this about the same time with

each of my children, and it has NOT been a recurring problem. Everything

gets easier -- have faith.

Mastitis often starts with a plugged duct. Try massaging the affected breast

during nursing (around the milk ducts) and changing the baby's position

during nursing. Whatever you do, even if it hurts, do NOT stop nursing.

Nursing will actually help *you* get better. If you get a fever, you need to

REST (not bad advice anyway, right?) -- don't get up for anything unless it

is absolutely necessary. Warm compresses will help ease the pain. Do not use

breast pads or at least change them very often, and you might be most

comfortable without a bra altogether. Make sure your bra is sized correctly,

too. If you have cracked nipples, lansinoh (lanolin-based product carried

lots of places including Babies R Us) will help.

Trust your body and your own instincts -- most MD's will give you

antibiotics for this, but at least 75% of cases clear up on their own in the

same amount of time without antibiotics (according to my memory from reading

" The Nursing Mother's Companion " a few years ago.)

I had mastitis about two years ago, but it is still so fresh in my

memory..shudder. Anyway, you do NOT need a doctor or antibiotics. Like

others have already said, NURSE, NURSE, NURSE, that helps draw out the

infection the most. REST and massage the breast towards the nipple. Use a

compress, as hot as you can stand without burning you, I was told to use a

tea bag, let it steep in hot water and use it as hot as you can handle

without burning your skin, then drink the tea, because you need LOTS of

liquids, especially water. I was told by my LLL leader to nurse so that the

baby's chin is resting on the infected site, you can do it on your hands and

knees if necessary. She also told me to get into a hot tub and relax. It

usually doesn't last very long, I think that I felt really bad for about 24

hours, then just kind of drained the next day. Good luck.

Most of the time mastitis is brought on by stress and not nursing enough. So,

stay home and get some help with housework and nurse, nurse, nurse. Try

different positions, this helps to drain the breast more effectively. If there

is no fever it is probably a plugged duct. Warm compresses, cabbage leaf

compresses, massage and rest. If you feel tired than you need to rest. Its you

bodies way of telling you whats best. Amy

It does depend on your particular individual symptoms when it comes to

homeopathy but they are some remedies to look up and consider
