Guest guest
From what I understand, breastfeeding the first year of a child's life helps protect against pertussis to a certain degree. If the mother never was vaccinated for pertussis, that is even better for the baby. `~*`~*`~* Holly~ momma to: iel (5/96) & Jenavieve (5/02) " The care of children is life's most important task. Guest guest
Thanks Holly. From what I read on a few sites on the internet, in a recent epidemic in the US, of all the people who got pertussis, 82% had 4/4 shots and the rest had 3 out of 4 shots. So it seems quite confusing... Guest guest
The vaccine wears off. So, if the mother had never had the vaccine and had actually *had* pertussis, she would be able to assist her nursing baby if exposed to pertussis, but otherwise not, hopefully delaying infection until the baby is better able to cope with the illness. I'm guessing the vaccination is not so much a factor in protection as having had an actual case of it in the past. Just yet another case of not seeing the forest for the trees. - Re: Breastfeeding vs Pertussis question Thanks Holly. Guest guest
Hi , Another thing which crossed my mind is that, apparently a breastfed baby's response to vaccines is better than a bottle fed baby's. So, shouldn't breastfed babies rather receive only one instead DTP of three? Also, if the mother provides antibodies through her milk, couldn't the mother receive the vaccine(s), develop the antibodies, and pass them on through her breast milk? Vaccines scare me. With my other two children: they were both breastfed (each, two years) and what I noticed was that they were very healthy until they received their vaccines. Then they developed ear infections and colds, etc., as if the immune system was " engaged " and couldn't respond so well to ordinary germs at the same time. With my third, who has only received one OPV and BCG at birth, she is extremely healthy. Lorinda On Monday, November 10, 2003, at 08:26 , wrote: > The vaccine wears off. Bacteria mutate all the time - one dose of pertussis does not guarantee lifelong immunity, does it? Occurrence of this dis-ease has to be down to susceptibility, and the degree of it to medical *labelling*. Guest guest
Hi everybody, All of this information is super. How common place is a broken rib, hemorrage or brain damage due to forceful coughing in a small child? (my toddler is not quite two and a girl, I don't know if that makes a difference?) Could this be similar to the flu, if you are susceptible you get it badly, and if you are not the case is mild? I don't get the flu (no shot either) but my husband did after a flu shot and he has never had one again. Forgive the question overload, I do not have anyone with whom I can discuss these things. Thank you, , Ca >From: Sheri Nakken <vaccineinfo@...> >Reply-Vaccinations >Vaccinations >Subject: RE: Breastfeeding vs Pertussis question >Date: Mon, 10 Nov 2003 11:56:29 +0000 > >At 10:26 PM 11/09/2003 -0800, you wrote: > >The vaccine wears off.
