' Message for the Day - Sunday

DO UNTO OTHERS 12/16/2001

I know we all sit with our holiday lists and figure out what we`re going to

get Aunt Polly and Uncle Bill, and of course, there are your nieces and

nephews and there`s your boss at work. But what about the others? There are

so many people out there who could use a little smile. Yes, I`m going to

talk about charity work today.

It seems people get in very charitable moods on Sunday. I was passing by a

Santa who was ringing a bell and collecting money for the Volunteers of

America. I approached Santa to put some money in the kettle. Santa turned

around, and he was a woman! She screamed. “ , I can`t believe

my eyes! You`re just one of my favorite people!” I hugged her, and the crowd

looked at me like I was a little crazy. I stayed there and took pictures for

45 minutes, and everyone who wanted a picture had to make a donation to the

Volunteers of America.

There is a homeless man who sleeps on the side of a building a few blocks

away from my house. I pass by, and I always say hello to him. Yesterday I

passed by and brought him a warm blanket and money for food. He said,

“You`re that guy on TV who makes people exercise. I love you.”

I also saw a family sitting in a car on the side of the street with a flat

tire yesterday. No, I did not change the tire, but I used my AAA card to

call and get them some help.

This evening, I will join the Slimmons Aerobic Choir, and we will be singing

Christmas carols at a nursing home! We`ve been practicing at Slimmons for a

couple of weeks. We`re singing “Santa Baby”, “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer”

, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, and many more holiday tunes. We`ll be

doing a couple of nursing homes during the season as well as a special

performance at a hospice for children with AIDS. We sound great, and I know

we`ll put a sparkle in everyone`s eyes!

When you do things like this, when you do unto others in this way, it just

does something for your heart. Today think about what you can do with some

spare time and know that you will touch lives in this way.
