Hi Diane,

The only treatments that I have tried were concerning the medical issues. I

think it's important to get the brain working properly before anything else.

The only thing I have heard about AIT was in J. Smythes testimony.(link

below) He is now addressing the medical issues, but in his testimony he

states that his son lost the few words he had after AIT.

Becky, I think what you are doing is in line with what Kathy was saying and

what Dr. G says is needed. Helping the brain medically, not just doing the

other things that won't correct the immune problems. Fast ForWard was one

of the things that Dr. Fosnot recommended for my son. The school instead

wasted the whole year trying to not address anything at all. I am also

interested in Biofeedback because of others who have found it helpful.

Rehabilitation is definitely needed, but you want to be developing the

correct parts of the brain. NOT getting some other part to take over the

function.

Hi ,

I have found the whole biofeedback concept very interesting. There are

parents who have said the treatments have helped their kids alot. Mine are

being treating for , but I have been trying to look at other things that

could be helpful. One of the things that I found interesting is that some

of the literature discusses an improvement in brain bloodflow.

The site below is one that is mentioned alot. Hope this helps. :)

AIT does not have any effect on the immune system which is the source of the

problem. If you are not healing the immune system and allowing your child to

have access to the parts of the brain that he is now not utilizing then any

kind of therapy has a limited chance. There are no studies in the literature

that say AIT is beneficial although there are anecdotals. The bottom line is

that healing the immune system is the only thing that makes sense!

Neuroimmunedr.com is the answer. Kathy R

Go for it. Non-invasive and possibly may help. Unlike many " treatments " for

autism, this has no downside so long as your child can sit still long enough

to complete it. It's also pretty intensive. Good luck! Let me know how he

does.

My oldest son participated in the Berard method of AIT in 8/92. I researched

it for a year prior to him having it. All I wanted was to have him be no

longer or have decreased sensitivity to high frequency sounds. To this day

his only sensitivity/fear is blown up balloons in enclosed environments.

Strangely he no longer required 60 msg. of Ritalin by Week 2 of the training.

He was napping (and still does). He turned 20 7/30. The behavioral issues

involved remained constant for about six months and then he seemed to peak.

By that I mean intense behavioral outbursts decreased gradually. Now,

although I started a new job (thank goodness) in 11/92 I don't think that

played as much a factor in his life as starting the new private sp ed school

in 9/92 with staff more trained on autism.

Did it help him to talk more? I don't know. I was just pleased he tolerated

loud noises better. Eliminating Ritalin was an unexpected joy. He did

however by Week 2 also state " I hate being autistic " during a behavioral

outburst. I think of that as the initiation of self-determination.

sorry, Kathy... I disagree with you on this one. While I am a HUGE supporter

of therapy and have been connected with Dr. Goldberg for four years, I

think it is equally important to find the bits and pieces educationally to

help our kids. If someone's child meets the AIT Training profile, and they

have the money to do it, why not try it? It doesn't hurt. And may have en

enormous benefit. We have followed protocol, plus we have an extensive

IEP and have completed programs such as Fast ForWord. I am also very

interested in Biofeedback because my son seems to meet the profile for good

outcome. We cannot just let protocol teach the kids. It's everything

together. Everyone together. Becky

well said, Becky! I think the important thing here is to do everything we

can, but to first " do no harm " I find AIT to fit into the category of

harmless and potentially helpful. I think Dr. Goldberg believes in PROOF of

a problem before treating it, a position I support. In the meantime anything

we can do to help our children learn and function is worth the time and

effort. linda

What is the AIT profile? We were going to try it with my son after we are

finnished with Dr. G.'s protocol. He is four and trying to talk now. Does not

have sound sensitivity. I was just curious. Thanks. Kathy

: Re: effects on brain from AIT, biofeedback, and Fast ForWord ....

well, that's far too much info for one email, but what I can say is that

there are studies which demonstrate a change in processing with these

programs. If you're interested in learning more, I discovered the following

sites to help you do your own research. (If these hot links do not work,

please write me back and I will search the exact website address for you.) <A

By the way, Fast ForWord had a HUGE positive effect for my son with lasting

results! Some children cannot complete the program, so make sure your child

fits the profile before enrolling him/her. Experts in this area should know

who may benefit and who may not. Becky

IF you have the money is exactly right. There are anecdotals that say it

helps. That does not mean that it does of course. I agree that if it is

noninvasive and the child does not mind, and you can afford it. The few

patients that I had who tried it really did not have that kind of money to

spend so were disappointed. However, I would never delay starting the

protocol for AIT. Kathy

We really need an outline of what comprises a good rehab program for children

as they start getting better. We are slowly putting together one. If anyone

has any ideas please send them on! Please describe your child as what works

for my 11 year old may not do a thing for you 6 year old! The finished

product will be shared with everyone! KathyR

Becky, I agree. Though we seemed to have little success with AIT, it did not

hurt, and later efforts such as Fast ForWord were successful. How does

Biofeedback apply to this population, and where does one find information

about it?

Thanks

: Here is one side on biofeedback that links up to some very interesting

studies: <A HREF= " http://webideas.com/biofeedback " >THE BIOFEEDBACK WEBZINE</A

> (if hotlink does not work, please type in www.webideas.com/biofeedback. I

am very interested in pursuing this because of some of my son's attention

deficit issues. (Biofeedback is designed to help children with ADD, but there

are studies on children with autism, too.) Also, do a web search for there

may be additional info for children with autism. I know I read some specific

studies a while back, but I can't remember where. Dr. Goldberg thinks it has

some efficacy, but he warns to be cautious of the provider (make sure they

are sufficiently trained). Becky

I have had personal knowledge of a few kids who have lost all speech, and

regessed greatly after AIT. I have haerd of others who did well, but I don't

know of any personally. It had very little effect on our son.

Diane, My 8yo daughter did AIT 10days x2 hours (I think it was 2

hours) a day. It was in San Diego. To be honest I

haven't seen any change at all in my daughter's sensitivity's. She

is still very much bothered by many sounds. But I

did see pretty miraculous results on 2 other non verbal children

doing training at same time. We are now doing Fast

ForWord. The AIT cost $1300. Ellen
