Guest guest
I have a question or two about this heat treating that I've been wondering about: 1) Would it help to spray insecticide before, during or after heat treating? (It seems as though the heat would get them moving pretty quickly and they could be more vulnerable at that time than any other.) 2) Would fans help to blow the hot air in to areas where it might not reach otherwise? (I keep reading that when you guys do this, they (bugs) seem to go in to areas that the heat can't reach. I realize that this would probably cool the air a bit but if they weren't on too high, maybe a couple of fans could gently push the hot air in to corners, attics, etc., without cooling it off too much.) 3) Would keeping the temperature very high in your house between treatments speed up their life cycle and make getting rid of them quicker / easier? (I think the eggs (which seem to be almost invulnerable) are the problem here, not necessarily the adult ones that the heat kills immediately.) I realize you guys have probably thought of these things and have probably even tried them but I haven't seen anything posted regarding these questions myself, so, I would like to know what you think based on your experiences with this so far. ciao- som > > > > > > > > > > > > > > How did it work for you? > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > --------------------------------- > > > > Never miss a thing. Guest guest
SOM- You are right on about the eggs being invulnerable to anything we do. Excellent questions. I've never heat treated. I have no answers but just a different spin on your questions. After heat treatment do you all start to feel crawlers or biters afterward? Or both? The crawlers we might think are newly hatched or younger and the biters would most likely be adults that migrated to cold spots and came back. I'm sure this will be different for all people since we are not all fighting the same beast. Seacrest OUT. :-) ha-ha. I know I'm stupid sometimes. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > How did it work for you? > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > --------------------------------- > > > > > Never miss a thing. Guest guest
I've noticed after heat treating the smaller ones become more active. Last time after treating I noticed some tingling around my face (no crawling) but that sensation reduced after a couple of days. I thought at first we reinfested the house but that could be the ones that didn't die during the heat process or newly hatched ones that didn't get cooked enough but instead accelerated their birth. I think if you heat long enough effectively, you should be able to cook the eggs too. The first time I heat treated I ran the heater for about 6 hours and the day after I found a huge amount of white-yellowish sparkling dust over the kitchen table and pretty much everywhere. It was so much that it looked as if someone had poured yellow talc over the table. I think it would help to spray after heating just to make sure you get them while they are weak. I haven't done that because by the time I finish heating I'm so tired that I have no energy left. If you spray before heating you will dry the insecticide completely and lower its effect. But that's just my opinion, the opposite could be true. - My state entomologist told me that for bird mites you have to spray really heavy to completely wet the surfaces. He said that foggers don't work because they don't get into the cracks and crevices or under the tables. Just adding fans should not cool the air since fans only move the air. In my case, that has been my major challenge (moving the air efficiently). I'm putting off heating this weekend until I get a hold of some good commercial fans to help distribute the heat more efficiently to all areas. I'm not sure if keeping the temperature high between treatments will accelerate the birth of others or not. In my opinion, the most important thing is making sure you get the temperature really high at all places at the same time so that there is no place to hide. I even opened my refrigerator doorduring heat to make sure. In addition, making sure that there are no hiding places that will not get heated effectively. This sounds like a repetition but it is really hard to do, at least for me. The attic is another problem in addition to the crawl space (when you have one). I think I would have to spray some strong chemical on the attic to kill them as heating may not get rid of them because of the insulation. Even if I bring the attic temperature to 160F, the insulation in the attic will protect the mites. So the only option I see is replacing the insulation or spraying it with something really strong with some residual effect. Unfortunately I don't have anything I could spray that has any residual effect on mites. In my case I have tried to seal all possible access to the attic to prevent the mites from coming down inside the house. That is caulking inside the light sockets, electrical outlets, around AC registers, etc. I don't know if that's going to work as they can get out of the attic down the exterior of the walls and still be a problem on the outside of the house. I hope this helps. Please keep bringing up the ideas and suggestions. Guest guest
I also bought 3 Lasko box fans at Lowes but they do not seem to push enough air for me. I'm looking at some commercial ones but they seem to expensive! Guest guest
Thank you for that thorough response- All of you are very smart and resourceful for coming up with all these genius ideas. It's very cool to watch people who don't know one another from Adam help one another in this way... Imagine what could be accomplished if all of us combined the hours of thought, time, energy and money we've put in to these damn things and applied them to something else....... ciao- som > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > How did it work for you? > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > --------------------------------- > > > > > > > Never miss a thing. Guest guest
SOM- I think you are on to something with the heat and pesticide combination! http://www.asg.wur.nl/NR/rdonlyres/C46DBE42-73CD-45FF-B35B-3473D06BBE03/34661/HeatTreatment.pdf Research shows that combining heat and pesticide was proven very effective in removing the D.G.Like you say, we all need to put our ideas and experiences together to come up with a way to keep our guests under control..Keep up the fight- MM > > > > > > > > > > >> > > > > > > > > > > How did it work for you?> > > > > > > > > > >> > > > > > > > > >> > > > > > > > >> > > > > > > >> > > > > > > >> > > > > > > >> > > > > > > >> > > > > > > >> > > > > > > >> > > > > > > > ---------------------------------> > > > > > > > Never miss a thing. Guest guest
good. nice to know that one of my usually dumb ideas might actually help someone. I hope this doesn't sound too self indulgent- but, would you guys mind praying for me and my family when you get a chance? I'm having a very hard time with being away from my loved one's for the past 3 years and the holidays are particularly horrible, especially considering they are so close by (3 hour drive). Before this, I was with them constantly and I had to stop seeing them because I love them and don't want them getting what I have. They think I haven't shown up because I'm on drugs or something which makes it even worse and I can't tell them what's really happening because then they would really be worried sick. blessings som > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > How did it work for you? > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > --------------------------------- > > > > > > > > > Never miss a thing.
