Guest guest
Last weekend I bombed the house using a very high concentration of permethrin and sulfur but unfortunately, even after leaving the products on the walls and ceiling for a week, I still have the mites. Permethrin, as documented on birdmites.org and numerous other places, does close to nothing to bird mites since they become resistant to it pretty fast. Unfortunately it is one of the most commonly used pesticides in the US. My guess, probably 7 of of 10 over the counter insecticides have it as the active ingredient. Another dissapointing fact just learned is that it leaves a residual effect up to two years after application. A study done in Germany monitored the content of permethrin in household dust and found significant levels up to 2 years after the initial application. In Germany it is now required decontamination of the house prior to reentering. This is really a concern esp. if you have kids around the house. You can guess what I'll be doing for the next couple of days, hand scrubbing all my walls and ceilings. This is very contrasting to everything else you read about permethrin, so below is the link to the discussion: http://www.safe2use.com/ca-ipm/0099-10-04.htm You be the judge.
