Think just inflammation..with some infection. You may use the antibiotic

they prescribed (prob. what it is)..or some benadryl (or generic)...terrific for

most any inflammation..and no side effects. Keep this in your med. cabinet

for burns, etc. A lifesaver.

I would think that a stent..to maintain drainage would be indicated.

Clearly fusion is not acceptable.

Hi Kerra,

Yes, I have heard of this. A neighbor told me about her baby's introitus

closing up when my daughter was also a baby. They were using a cream, too.

It's been about 13 years ago, but I'm pretty sure she said it was a hormone

cream.

When she told me about it, I remember checking my daughter (she was under a year

then). Her's appeared to be " closed, " too. I never did anything about it.

Always forgot to ask the ped then. Now she's a healthy 13 1/2 year old with

normal periods and all. So... I'm not sure what to make of it.

(BTW, your healthy girl is a great " ad " for your ped as to what children can be

if they're not vaccinated and are breast fed!) Congrats!

Kay

Took 10 month old daughter to pediatrician today. First time since

birth, never been sick, still breastfeeding, no vaccines. I refused

the Hep B they wanted to give her at one day of age!

The reason I took her in is going to sound strange. Have any of you

heard of the vagina opening of a baby girl closing up? The

pediatrician says there's no need to be alarmed and gave me a

prescription for some cream to rub in the area that would help to

open it back up. I don't know what the drug is called. Being adverse

to drug therapy, I'm wondering if there is a natural substance I

could use instead. I will use the prescribed one if necessary, but

thought Id run it by this group first.

Thanks,

Kerra

All 3 of my daughters had this happen, it's not a big deal. Just take a warm,

wet washcloth and gently wipe the vaginal opening several times a day, it will

open back up. If it is almost completely closed let the washcloth lay on the

area for a few minutes and then GENTLY pull the sides apart. I never tried to

separate more than 1/2 cm at a time, it is painful when you pull the sides

apart. Any calendula cream would help. I would strongly recommend NOT using

the cream if it has Hormones in it. It is completely unnecessary.

The vaginal opening closing up does not need antibiotics unless it looks red and

You do not need to do anything for this. Fused labia is a common occurrence,

even in infants. It will resolve on its own when the body begins producing

estrogen. The cream is estrogen and completely unnecessary.

Glad to know my memory still serves me! : ) And yes, I can testify that it

resolves on its own. My daughter is evidence of that. Probably just another

case of a pediatrician feeling they just had to intervene, and then feeling they

did something wonderful (when it would have resolved on its own anyway!)

Ok already lots of replies to this one but decided to put my two cents in.

My older dd (first kid) had a partially fused labia too. Luckily my doc

ant the time (a nurse prac.) was willing for me to forego the hormone

drug and use a phyto-estrogen cream instead. (There was no way I was

using a hormone cream on a less than one year old.)

Bought it at the health food store and only used it for a week or so

like once a day. The hcp said if it stayed fused my dd could suffer from

UTIs. She was fine and it did resolve.

If I had to do again I would probably just wait and see.

Randall, could the fused labia cause UTIs? Just curious.

I'm not Randall, but it is possible for the fusion to increase the risk for

UTI's. Depends on how badly they fuse.

This is just my experience and my opinion. :-)

I have never heard of this. It is conceivable that a completely fused labia

could prevent menstrual blood from escaping, but by that time the problem

resolves itself.

For parents of baby girls in diapers, this situation can be prevented by

gently spreading the inner labia with a bit of outward pressure on the

external skin when changing baby's diaper.

I advise doing nothing to " treat " this.

And, obviously could prevent the voiding of urine.

They call it labial adhesions - it is common - and often caused by

inflmmation and sometimes it just happens

http://www.emedicine.com/ped/topic1267.htm

it often goes away at puberty WITHOUT TREATMENT

often doesn't have to be treated unless blocking urinary flow

can use homeopathic calendula cream or gel for help with inflammation

NO, it is not what it is - they have NOT given an antibiotic

IT is most likely an estrogen cream which I personally would NOT want to use

not sure if there is an alternative

I would see a homeopath

Sorry, don't agree

There are many side effects to Benadryl and not for inflammation but for

allergic reactions and is a drug

There are many homeopathic remedies for inflammation - must individualize

to find the right one

Keep this in your med. cabinet

Not randall, but yes it can if it fuses over the meatus or the labial

problem is due to inflammation

See a homeopath ;-)
