Guest guest
Hi Gail, GSSH is oxidized glutathione. GSH is reduced glutathione. Don't ask me what the difference is because I haven't the vaguest notion! (Just old stuff from when I used to edit Journal of Neurochemistry.) I bet Rich could tell us. Here...if no one in the group answers you about abbreviations and acronyms, sometimes this is helpful. http://www.acronymfinder.com/ in Champaign IL > > What is GSH >

Guest guest
Gail and , Yes, that's correct. Glutathione carries out its functions starting from the reduced state, GSH. Some of it is oxidized to GSSH, which is two glutathione molecules bound together by a disulfide bond. This occurs when glutathione is used to reduce an oxidizing free radical or a peroxide. In order to be used again, the oxidized glutathione must be recycled. This is done by an enzyme called glutathione reductase. It makes use of riboflavin and also NADPH, which is produced in the pentose phosphate shunt, and alternate pathway that is part of the glycolysis pathway, which is used to begin the metabolism of glucose. So it requires metabolizing some carbohydrate to recycle the glutathione so it can be used again. Rich > > > >> What is GSH
